Starting this one way early because I'm going to Giants/Mets tonight. HAEGER! Figures he has to go against a top guy like Carpenter, though.

Chris Carpenter (12-3, 2.27)

at

CHARLIE HAEGER! (11-6, 3.55 in AAA)

MSTI, the Cardinals HAD to come back with Carpenter just to have a chance against the mighty knuckleballer.
My hope is facing him throws the Cardinals hitters off so bad they can't hit the entire series.

Maybe they'll succumb to Charlie's famous hit song: "I can't hit......55".

My hope exactly.
Okay, somebody explain to me why you're all obviously excited about Haeger. He's a knuckleballer - I get that part. But his numbers are hardly staggering. These Cardinals have some very professional hitters on their club. I suppose the rooks and new kids will have issues with Haeger, but... I'm just wondering, why all the love?
- Kyle... CrossRoads ChurchTough to answer that Kyle. I guess for me it's kind of like the Mitch Jones thing. I wanted to see the guy get a chance and see what he can do.
With Haeger, I guess in the back of my mind I'm hoping that he develops into a premier knuckleballer, which, I know, is very unlikely. But we can always hope. We've seen Weaver, Stluts, Milton, Schmidt...why not give the knuckleballer a chance?

Oh, absolutely. I'm interested, for sure. But there seems to be a buzz about him that I can't figure out, that's all. There wasn't really a buzz with Weaver, Stults, Milton, and especially not with Schmidt. So I was just wondering if there was something I was missing - something I hadn't read, perhaps - that might get me a little more pumped up for tonight's game.

"Charlie Haeger" just sounds like a country musician.
I hope he does well. Maybe he'll catch lightning in a bottle, as Rick Monday likes to say. Or maybe he'll stink. Or maybe he'll be just mediocre. We'll find out.
Be prepared to hear Vin sing the praises of Carpenter and Wainwright. But nobody is unbeatable.

It almost looks like Torre is setting up the kid to fail. Instead of running him out there against free-swingers like the Snakes or Giants, he saves him for a team that exercises patience and is of a veteran makeup. This is one of the many reasons I am down on Torre. That list continues to get longer by the day. I will say this, if Torre starts Martin behind the plate, I will seriously question his sanity. Martin has never caught a knuckleballer, while I have to believe that Ausmus has caught just about every kind of pitcher. That would be the smart move, let's see if Torre has that much smarts?

Yeah, the thought of Martin trying to catch knuckleballs is nightmare material. So, of course Torre will start Martin. What's really hard to believe is what Vinny said during yesterday's game. He said that the Dodgers didn't even have a catcher's mitt made for catching knuckleballs, and were luckily able to borrow one from Tom Candiotti who was in the D'back broadcasters booth. Does no one in this organization have enough brains to send one up with Haeger from Albuquerque?

Personally, I have DREAMS that he'll perform well RIGHT NOW and the Dodgers will be on TOP OF THE WORLD. And hey, if he sucks, I'LL FALL IN LOVE AGAIN with some other scrub 5th-starter, maybe even one with a BAD REPUTATION. But for tonight, I'm hoping Charlie gives us some SERIOUS JUJU.

Someone has way too much free time to Google all those Sammy Hagar songs.

Google them??? I memorized them before I taped up the box of LP's labeled "8th grade music favorites"!

I gave up on Sammy the day he joined Van Halen. That is like Ozzy signing with the Osmonds. JUMP is the cause of the present economic downturn we are having in this country, I can prove it. I know if I am Ronnie Montrose, I am erasing all of Hagar's mentions off of all of the liner notes.

Truth be told, I hated Van Hagar. I was a bigger David Lee Roth fan than I was a Hagar fan, and the Van Hagar sound just didn't appeal to me. And Eddie on keyboards never did anything for me, either.

David Lee Roth = David Hasselhoff, 'nuf said. Van Halen was and is nothing more than fluff. Give me a real band like Black Sabbath or Cream. Then again, I hated most of the bands that came out of the mid seventies.

A friend of mine made that the thesis of his doctoral dissertation. It didn't get past the professors, but it was food for thought.

If I had to label my eight grade favorites, it would be Zepplin, Jimi, Sabbath and very early Deep Purple. Let's face it, there wasn't much to choose from for a whitebread kid in Nor-East Cali at that time. It was either C&W or Billy Graham on the radio.

Well there you go. If you couldn't get your hands on Fair Warning back around 1978, then I understand your ambivalence. I mean, come on. DLR was pure entertainment. The man WAS rock 'n roll all by himself. He single handedly changed the game. I can't think of any one person who came to popularity after Zep, the Stones, and Bob Dylan who had more influence on R'nR than David Lee Roth.
Before you laugh, just think about it...

I thought and the most revolutionary thing I can think that DLR did was be stinking drunk on stage and forget the words to songs he co-wrote. Mind you, Van Halen and DLR will be remembered as being the best during the dark ages of R&R. But, that is like getting into the playoffs with a lower than .500 record. I was dragged to two Van Halen concerts and the first one was bad, DLR fell down twice and was slurring the lyrics at the beginning of the show. The second concert I saw was worse. I think the whole band was ripped - Michael Anthony knocked over a keyboard stand and I swear it looked like DLR was lip-synching. It is pretty sad when a lightweight bad like Giuffria blows the headliners off of the stage. The thing is, Van Halen was not the worst band I saw live. That honor still belongs to a GNR show I saw in the early eighties. Lousy sound system, bickering between bandmembers and I think Izzy Stradlin was nearly comatose.

Umm. . .David Bowie. Bruce Springsteen. Without Patti Smith and the Ramones, you wouldn't have have had 70's punk, 80's Rock or 90's Alternative Rock.
Kyle, I agree with your view of DLR and the original VH line-up. Growing up in SoCal in the early 80s you couldn't not love VH. But even I have to admit they weren't the most influential band musically. The thing that made the original VH special was the tension between DLR's clown act and Eddie's guitar virtuosity. They balanced each other out and made some good music. Dave was the showman: Eddie the musician. Once Dave was replaced by Sammy the balance was gone and they turned into just another screaming heavy metal band.

But if he doesn't, he best be headin' to PANAMA.
I'm talking sheer entertainment value when I talk about influence and the effect DLR had on R'nR entertainment as a whole. He wasn't smashed at the VH concert I saw - he was flat out unbelieveable in the way he worked the crowd. And Westside is right - it was the balance between he and Eddie that was so unique. But hey, we're talking about musical tastes when I was around 16 years old, so I'm not gonna defend it to the death.
And by the way, I believe Eddie was wasted in EVERY video they ever shot. Let alone in concerts.
- Kyle... CrossRoads ChurchSo what's up with Chad's mug still showing as the SP tonight?

I think they did every show ripped to the gills. Much like GNR, early Aerosmith and there was no question Foghat was deep into the adult beverages for any show I ever saw.
