I like the Giles invite. He has become a liability in the OF, but he was the type of pesky hitter that could be an effective LH PH.

He was always very selective with VG strike zone judgement, and hit the ball where it was pitched. On the bases he is probably down to average to below average (slow), but even if he is now a base-clogger he could hopefully be pinch-run for if he got on-base. Manny Mota rarely played in the field and often got pinch-run for, so there is a lot of precedent for such a use.

Giles could probably play LF or RF in a pinch. TMIMITW can play RF in a pinch. Bison can play CF or RF, Ethier can play RF, LF and CF in a pinch. A reserve OF with true CF skills might be a big whther or not we carried a guy like Giles. Giles and Reed Johnson might be a solid OF reserve duo.

We seem to have committed to too many 2B types and may have to eat some $ if Carroll proves to be the weakest option. We need to carry an IF reserve that is at least decent at SS. Giles and Eyechart may be battling for the same positionally-challenged LH PH spot as we will have a hard time carrying 6 reserves with so many pitching question marks.

I also think if he's healthy Amazga gets a spot on the OD roster, as he can backup both SS and CF. Is ee Dodgers carrying 12 pitchers, the 8 starters, and 5 bench guys:
Ausmus and Johnson are locks. The loser of the Belliard/Carroll 2B competition (with Belliard being cut if Dewitt is the starter since he's the lesser of the two money wise), Giles/Eyechart and possibly Paul as LH bat (and with Paul you get a glove and speed as well), and Amazega\Hu\Green (with Amazega as favorite since he can also play OF). If Dodgers ever carry a 13th pitcher I think the lefty bat off bench is the most susceptible to get cut, since you need a back up SS somehow.

Now that Manny is finally signed, lets get Pierre off the team

The more I read about Amezaga the more it sounds like he won't be ready until June at the earliest. This is going to put me in the uncomfortable situation of having to root for Nick Green in spring training just to avoid Angel Berroa, Part 2.

Yeah, I have been reading that, also. Seems the microfracture thing takes nearly a full year to heal and even then it is a guesstimate. Hu may have bought himself a mulligan. Let's hope he can make some decent contact this spring. The thought of Nick Green riding our bench is enough to make me want to blow chunks.

At this point, I would have to think that Giles is third on the pre-season LH bat off of the bench depth chart behind Eyechart and Paul. While Paul is my first choice, Mike makes a good argument that Paul needs at bats and playing time - two things he will not get in LA. So, it leaves it down to Eyechart and Giles. At least Eyechart has some defensive value and he has shown to be a good bench player. Giles is the huge unknown on the bench as he has been an everyday starter for the past ten years and we have zero idea if he can come in cold and put in a good at bat.

As it stands, the need for a fifth outfielder will be based on who wins the second base job. If DeWitt wins, I see Carroll, Belliard and a shortstop sticking, thereby meaning we go with four outfielders as Eyechart is pretty much a lead pipe cinch to make the team. If DeWitt doesn't win the second base job, Giles has a better chance of sticking. I have to think that the big battles in camp will be for the 24th and 25th spot on the roster and who breaks camp as the 12th pitcher. Of course, second base is the biggest battle.

Until now, somehow I've missed this:

Last but not least, talks on a two-year deal are not going well between the Giants and Tim Lincecum. It looks like the case will go to an arbitration hearing, and you've gotta figure that Lincecum has a pretty strong case. One way or the other, he seems likely to break the $10MM record for a first-year arbitration player, currently held by Ryan Howard.

Milk it Timmy, milk it...! With the loss of three MPH off of his fastball (already) last year, he's gotta be this years' leading candidate for Tommy John reconstruction (and that's a fate I don't wish on anyone!). IMHO, the Giants should've pulled a Billy Beane with him this off-season, and traded the defending two-time Cy Young winner for a much needed middle-of-the-order bat, and a boatload of prospects to restock their surprisingly strong farm system...

    Don't say I didn't warn ya...!

I am just wondering if the Gint's low ball bid is based on Jailbait's proclivity for the ganja. I can already see Sabean making that the basis of his argument for the $8 million offer.

I saw that piece from Howard this morning, and to me, it was more than enough reason to preclude inviting Giles to ST. How does this history work with Joe Torre's foundation?

Despite my bitter feeling about the desertion by the McCourts from Vero Beach, here is some possible good news for you folks out west. If anyone is considering flying to Phoenix for ST, Southwest Airlines is offering $39 each way fares from LAX, Burbank, Orange County, and Ontario. You have to book by Thursday, so time is of the essence. My market is not covered, so I can continue my ST boycott.

Mets Reach Agreement With Hisanori Takahashi. Take one more lefty off of the Dodger radar. According to Crasnick, we were reportedly the other finalist. Contract numbers are unknown, believed to be a mere $1M if he makes the club out of ST, with another $500,000 in incentives...

That's a bargain bin that even McCheap can afford...!

Yeah. My guess is that he chose the Mets because their rotation is in even worse shape than the Dodgers', so he'd have a better shot of making the team.

That is my thinking, also. One thing that continues to irritate me is that the wonks at ESPN and other sites seem to forget that Charlie Haeger is a candidate for the fifth spot with McDonald, Elbert and several dozen stiffs brought in by Ned. Of all the pitchers who are competing for the fifth spot Haeger has the best numbers, albeit a small sample size. But neither McDonald nor Elbert have a huge sample size, either. I just hope that we don't end up seeing some stiff like either Ortiz or Josh Towers as our number five. The only non-roster pitcher I would even consider is Stoner and I feel his best value is long man out of the pen/spot starter. IMHO, Charlie Haeger should be a leg up on the rest for the fifth spot. I still think his best value would be to slot him between Kershaw and Billz. It just reminds of something I read about the Oakland A's of the late eighties, some smart manager (I wish I could remember who) would stick a soft tosser between two flame-throwers to throw off McGwire, Canseco, etc.... to screw up their swings for a complete series. I keep on thinking it was either the Royals or the White Sox, but a big deal was made of it at the time.

Linccum would have won his arbitration hearing, and the $13 million payout. Of that I have little doubt.

Even though I don't believe any person who makes $23 million is underpaid, it looks like the Gnats got off light with this deal. Assuming Lincecum performs somewhere near his established norms (and I am one who believes he will, even if it is the minority opinion) he would have been in line to break the bank again next winter. Add another few million to this years payout and Lincecum could have given up close to $7 million or more the next two years by signing this deal.

    Surprising signing to me.

I would tend to agree with you hunteralan, which makes me wonder if Team Timmy might know that something might be "up" with his arm/shoulder... We heard reports late in the year that he "lost" 3-MPH off of his fastball within a single year! Why else would a player sign a bargain deal (bargain only for a back-to-back Cy Young winner in the upswing of his career!)? Durability concerns MUST be an issue to a player of his stature...!

Interesting... I want to be the first to predict that he spends "significant" time on the DL during the course of the 2-year deal!

Now it's OK to go back to your dope smoking...! (To illustrate their level of stupidity, my Gint fan "friends" tend to think his proclivity to "smoke" is a cool thing...!)

Gotta figure Timmy's people knew they were getting an arbitrator who is a zero tolerance kind of person. Even though it was a small amount of smoke, gotta think that Sabean is gonna keep that nugget for the next contract negotiation.

I got a feeling his back will go first. That much torque on each pitch is not doing his spine any good. My Gintfan neighbor thinks that the reason Jailbait is on the Kronik is that he is in pain pretty much all of the time. He says he can remember more than a few games where it looked like Jailbait was throwing through the pain. I wonder if that could be part of the loss of a foot on his fastball. Add that to all the innings Melonhead is putting on his arm at a young age and I would not be shocked if Timmah was a closer before he hits free agency.
