No surprise here, but Brian Giles called it a career today.
Mike Scioscia's tragic illness - the blog! For Dodger analysis, reviews, and hilarity.Mike Scioscias tragic illness:No surprise here, but Brian Giles called it a career today.
Good, after yesterday's embarrassing performance I'm sure that made it easier for him.
Now that Manny is finally signed, lets get Pierre off the teamMike Scioscias tragic illness:No surprise here, but Brian Giles called it a career today.
I will always remember Brian Giles, the player, one way: Career - 1183 walks / 835 strikeouts. Unheard of. He was Moneyball before there was a Moneyball. Steriod aided power or not, he was one disciplined, professional hitter.
That said... Glad he's not putting on a Dodger uniform beyond yesterday.
"It is called being a professional. If you take the money, give the effort. If you are a pro in any sport, you are always supposed to give your best effort." ~Joe Morgan.grabarkewitz:Very sad news, this morning. Willie Davis passed away, yesterday, at 69. I remember seeing him play when I was a kid and he was one of my favorite players for a while. As I got older, he kind of disappointed me ( three errors in the '66 World Series, never taking the next step and being a superstar, etc....), but he was part of one of Al Campanis' best steals - getting Mike Marshall for him when it was obvious that Davis was nearly done.
I loved watching Willie Davis as a kid. I remember he had one of the deepest voices I've ever heard. I'll never forget his interview after setting a record for a centerfileder with three errors in one inning of a World Series game (and he was normally a good fielder). In his DEEP voice he said (almost sang): " It's not my life...It's not my wife... So WHY worry"?
sad news indeed about Merlin Olson and Willie Davis. Both were icons of mine as a kid growing up.
... he (Willie Davis) had one of the deepest voices I've ever heard.
Very true. I used to envision a barbershop quartet consisting of Willie, Thurl Ravenscroft, Paul Robeson and Dennis Day.

when did the dodgers sign Woody Harrelson? oh wait that Casey trying to look younger in his late 30's. bring back the beard Blake, you're freaking us all out.
Willie Davis was just a lot of fun to watch. He was a blur on the bases, though never in Wills' class as a base stealer. Nobody was faster going first to third or racing into the gap for a long fly ball.
Willie attended at least one of the fantasy camps at Dodgertown Vero Beach. Sandy Koufax had NEVER made an appearance at one of the camps, but Sandy suffered all the adulation and worship from the campers just for an opportunity to say hello to Willie D, his old friend.

Yeah, I spent my money on the "In Beard We Trust" shirt and now the joke is spoiled!

Recent reports had The Beard working out at home, in great shape, and expecting to be ready for the start of the season. Sources have reported that a rift exists between The Beard and the former SF Giants' training staff that now haunts the Dodgers. The Beard refuses to report to Arizona for spring training for fear that it will hamper his normal workout routine.

It took me a minute to get that. Funny once my comprehension kicked in.
So, The Beard will be here opening day?

Make no attempt to find the Beard.
You cannot find the Beard.
The Beard finds you.
Poor fella, he has no ideaTwo continents, two losses, one day. Glad it's spring training. The second Taiwan game has been cancelled due to rain.
Kuo has been scratched from his start due to elbow soreness. His left elbow must already look like a downtown street map after all the surgeries, so this is more than worrisome.
George Sherrill is apparently fighting through some issues, as he has not looked good so far. With Kuo possibly hurt, Belisario still in Venezuela waiting for a visa, and now Sherrill struggling, the strength of the team looks like a question mark. Gagne has not appeared to be the answer, either so far.

Never enough:
Manny making money
Manny Ramirez told reporters in Taiwan that he volunteered to take the 15-hour plane ride to the island nation because he likes traveling to different parts of the world.
But Ramirez had a more tangible incentive to be part of the 33-man split squad that began its three-game exhibition series on Friday. The promoter of the series, Bros Sports, told Taiwan's Central News Agency that it agreed to pay Ramirez $170,000 in appearance and endorsement fees to ensure his participation in the series.
Ramirez will earn a $20-million salary from the Dodgers this year.
Just got home from the game in Tucson today. We left when it was 4-3 (don't know the final score). Billz looked decent. Ivan DeJesus made two errors at short in the bottom of the 2nd inning on back-to-back batters. One throwing, one on a grounder that ate him up. But Billz got through a bases loaded one-out jam by inducing a pop-up and a liner right at DeWitt.
Speaking of DeWitt, he hit a 3-run homer in his first AB. Almost dead-center, a 400-foot shot off Mulvey. The players call him Dewey, by the way. I like it.
AJ Ellis through out a scrub, and almost threw out Chris Young. The throw beat Young to the bag, but was about 3 feet to the short stop side. Ellis has a very quick release back there.
Other than Dewey and Billz, pretty much every other starter stayed in Glendale. I'm not sure who's in Taiwan, but it was kind of a bummer that no other position players made the trip. Can't blame 'em too much - it's the longest bus ride (2 hours) in the Cactus League.
All in all, a very nice day with my two youngest boys and some other friends. The facility (Tucson Electric Park) is nothing compared to Camelback Ranch. Woulda been nice if we could have gotten close the practice facilities, but that ain't happening at TEP. Pretty lame. But the seats were decent and the company was good. My kids got Donny's autograph.
I'm ready for April.
- Kyle... CrossRoads ChurchReally happy for DeWitt. Glad to hear mgmt talk about him as the favorite.
the 5th sp slot battle has been disappointing so far
but it's early.

Disappointing? Stults has pitched almost perfect ball, and some of the NRI are having very good ST to this point. If anything is disappointing it's the pen, because after Broxton, all the regulars we are counting haven't been that good, in fact Weaver is pitching his way off the team, and Mac back to AAA, not to mention Bells not even showing up, and Kuo and Sherrill banged upped.

Why would you accuse Manny of being greedy and agreeing to promote the Dodgers and baseball in Taiwan for a mere 170,000 bucks? It was actually 176,000 and two endorsements for products (NFI), which will probably be even more lucrative. Manny does not take the game cheaply.... : )

Again, small sample size, but maybe it's more disappointing for me as my rankings for who I'd like to see are McD, Elbert, Haeger - all off to rough starts. Stults and Monasterios have put up nice lines though, to be sure. The NRIs ... Meh.
The mad scientist formerly known as ngrossBecause we're back in Daylight Savings Time (which makes me very happy), I'm celebrating by giving you SEVERAL Dodgers Spring Training Pics of the Day:
Beginning with a couple in Taiwan:

And, from AZ:

And our two best images of the day: First, Billz pitching like he's ready:

And Dewey, hitting like HE'S ready:

Wow, is it just me or does Billz look like he lost weight?
Looks to me like Chris Withrow got his first taste of some ML-caliber action during ST ... 1 IP 3 Ks 0 H/BB.
Hell yeah.

From that picture he does look slimmer. Those thighs look about the same, though. Good sign.
After watching that Kemp HAMMER to straightaway CF, I might have to revise my projections. Wow, what a BOMB.
