As I said in the season thread, say what you want about the man, but I wish the Dodgers owners had the same passion to win as he did.
Same here. George didn't let Bud Lite get in his way to winning championships. Let's face it, he did as he pleased and even though he bought championships, he didn't lie to his team's fans or do anything on the cheap.
A sad day for baseball. Steinbrenner was such an interesting character, but such a contradiction. As an owner, he represented the best qualities you wanted in an owner (reinvesting money in the team, dedication, etc.), but sometimes the worst (too meddling in player evaluation, etc.). Personally, he could be incredibly generous and kind, but we also know the other side. Nonetheless, despite the warts, the man gave a damn about his team and wouldn't let anyone get in the way of winning. You can't ask for much more than that as an owner, and that's not counting the massive entertainment factor he brought to it all. He was entertaining, smart, and wanted to win as much as the fans. I respect that.
R.I.P., George... because God knows Billy Martin won't be after today!
".....and even though he bought championships, ....."
Isn't that what owners are supposed to do?:shamed: Just because ours don't, shouldn't mean it is bad.....
RIP George.
PS. Torge, someday I will tell you about an business argument I had with George through his lawyer, which I actually won. That didn't happen much in the world of the Steinbrenners.
