2011 BBWC MLB Predictions
  • It's tradition!  Time for the annual BBWC MLB predictions.  Normally we get a dozen or so to participate, but it'd be great if we could get twice that this year.  It doesn't take too long, especially if you cut and paste, then edit the template I have in this post.
Here is how the point system will work:

All-Star Break bonus points: 5 points per division leader and WC front-runner (ties count).
    Division Winner: 10 points
Wild Card: 10 points (note: the idea is to pick the 4 playoff teams from each league, so points are still awarded if the predictor gets the WC and division winner flip-flopped)
Division team rankings (getting all teams in order): 10 points
    Championship reps: 10 points each
    WS rep: 20 points
    WS winner: 40 points

A perfect season yields 300 points.

Deadline to participate is 5 PM (PST) Thursday.

An easy way to participate is to cut and paste the following into your reply, rearrange the teams as you see fit (don't forget to indicate your wildcard prediction), post any comments you'd like, and you're done.

    Good luck everyone!

    AL EAST
    Red Sox
    Rays
    Yankees (the pitching falls apart)
    Orioles
    Blue Jays

AL East Comments: I think the Yankees will pick it back up at the All Star break by getting some stud at the deadline for their prospects but they will struggle for half a season. The Sox will run away and hide and the Rays will fight for the WC. Look for the Orioles pitchers to mature and to suprise some.

AL West Comments: Rangers don't have enough pitching, A's don't have a enough offense and the Mariners should change their name to King Felix. The Angels win a bad division.

NL East Comments: At least two of the big 4 in Phili break down (Oswalt and Lee) the loss of Werth and Utley combined with a decomposing LF allows the Braves to nip them at the wire. That being said Halladay and Hamels carry them into the wild card. The Braves young pitching continues to mature and their young studs on offense explode. The Fish compete for a while but don't quite have enough of any single thing. The Mets suck and the Nats are still a year away.

  • Note: I’ve got 4 criterion that I’ve used to grade lineups, rotations, bullpen, and overall depth (scale of 1-10, 10 being the best) for each team. I’ve totaled the points for the 4 categories and then determined my divisional orders from there.

    AL EAST
    Yankees
    Orioles
    Red Sox
    Rays
    Blue Jays
    AL East Comments:
First, I honestly haven’t looked at any webs/blogs for the purpose of seeing their predictions. I’ve studied up a ton on individual players for fantasy and SIM purposes, but haven’t looked too much into teams and team chemistry. So I’m pleasantly surprised to see how the Orioles have put together their team this offseason. I gave them 6.5’s in their lineup and rotation, and 7’s in their ‘pen and depth. They should compliment each other well, and it might just be enough to squeak out a wildcard berth. The Yanks are stronger than the Sox everywhere except in their rotation, so the Sox may be 3rd, but lucky for them the Rays suck, and the Blue Jays are… the Blue Jays. And the AL East is no longer the pride of the AL. That goes to…. The Central.

    AL CENTRAL
    ChiSox
    Twins (WC)
    Tigers

    Royals
    AL Central Comments:
I like what the ChiSox have done this offseason. The only thing that’ll screw up my predictions for this division is a healthy Justin Morneau. If he’s back, the Twins make a serious run at the division title. But like last season, this is a difficult division to predict. Any of the top 3 teams could win it. The Twins bullpen depth beats out the Tigers for the WC.

    AL WEST
    Rangers
    Mariners
    Halos
    A’s
    AL West Comments:
The Rangers have the best offense – perhaps in all of baseball – IF they stay healthy. But that’s the one thing that makes predictions difficult. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Rangers and Twins in the ALCS, but it all depends in injuries. In the Rangers’ case, they have very good depth, so I give them the edge over all the other West teams. The Mariners have a nice 1-2 punch in their lineups and rotations. The ‘pen is unproven and they have little depth outside Ackley IMO (in terms of potential 2011 influence).

    Championship Series: Twins vs. Rangers
I think Ozzie Guillen has some major gaffe (inside or outside the clubhouse – I don’t know), that has a huge affect on them vs. the Rangers in the ALDS.
    AL WS Rep: Twins
The Rangers will greatly miss Cliff Lee in the 7-game series.

    NL EAST

    NL East Comments:
The will prove to be the 2011 version of the Rangers of 5 years ago. All pop, no arm. Livan Hernandez? Really? How does anyone get excited about that? You go ahead and follow the money, Jayson, but the Nats will be at the bottom once again. The Marlins should be the fun team to watch out of the NL East this year. The Phils will greatly disappoint. And do I really have to say anything about the Mets? Thank you.

    NL Central Comments:
The NL West – home of the worst pitching rotation in all of baseball (a close second has to be the Nats), as Kevin Correia is the “Ace” of that bunch. But more importantly, how ‘bout them Reds! The Brewers are consistently 7’s in the 3 most significant categories I graded, but a little weak in depth. The Reds could challenge for it all this season, but their pitching will likely have a couple weak moments in the playoffs due to inexperience.

    AL East

    Red Sox
    Yankees (WC)
    Rays
    Orioles
    Jays

Comments:  Sox will have pitching issues all year, but their offense will be so good it won't matter.  I see Cashman dealing Montero for a pitcher and I would not be shocked if it was Billz.   Rays have too many questions on offense and I am not sold on Brignac at short.   Orioles will begin to show that they are on the right path and the Jays will be the best fifth place finisher, but have too many questions around the infield and in the pen.

    AL Central

    Twins
    Tigers
    White Sox
    Royals
    Indians

Comments:  Twins are too well balanced to finish anywhere but first.   They have two top flight closers and a deep lineup.  Their only question will be how long Kyle Gibson stays in the minors.   Tigers are a bullpen away from competing with the Twins on a regular basis.   The White Sox spent a lot of money, but they also got older and I am not sold on their starting pitching after Danks.   The Royals will be scary after the break when Hosmer and all the starting pitching starts to come to the show.  The Indians are just bad, I figure Carmona will be wearing a Yankee uniform by July and Sizemore will be sporting a Ranger uniform sooner.

    AL West

    Rangers
    A's
    Mariners
    Halos

Comments:  Just a bad division.   Rangers have the most talent and can make a move for more pitching and a centerfielder.   I suspect that if Sizemore shows he is healthy, he is Dallas bound and the same can be said for any available arm.   The A's have too much pitching to finish lower than second and too little offense to finish above second.    The M's look to finally have a clue and I suspect that King Felix will have a scary good year.  I would not be shocked if they mirror the A's most of the season with strong pitching and a lackluster offense.   The Halos are just not good and I would not be shocked to see Weaver being moved for tons of young talent.   I can see him in a Gnats uniform if they are willing to move Belt and a few other pieces.

    NL East

    Braves
    Phils (WC)
    Fish
    Nationals
    Mets

Comments:  Depth will be the only reason the Phils don't win this division.  If Utley is down for long, they will have offensive issues as I doubt that Brown is as good as some think.   Their pen could also be a worry because I am not sold on Madson as a closer.   The Braves have more offense and enough pitching to stick it out for the season.  I suspect the Fish will be keep it close to the break, but lack of offense at third and center will be their undoing.   The Nationals will really start to reap the strong draft classes of the past couple years and do not be shocked if Bryce Harper comes up for good in August.   The Mets could go into Fire Sale Mode in May.   Reyes, Beltran, KRod and Pelfrey could all be gone by Memorial Day.    Wilpon's financials will nearly be as frightening as McCourts when it all gets aired out.

    NL Central

    Reds
    Brewers
    Cubs
    Cardinals
    Astros
    Pirates

Comments: The Reds will take this division easily.   Too much pitching and more offense than any other team in the division.   Even Doofy will not be able to screw this one up.   Brewers have too many nagging questions.  Shortstop looks weak and centerfield is terrible.   The Prince question will bother them all year and defense will be their biggest challenge.   I would not be surprised if they move Fielder at the deadline to get something for him.  The Cubs and Cardinals both have similar issues - money.   The Cardinals cannot do anything until they satisfy Pujols and the Cubs have too much money on bad ballplayers, both will not be able to make moves to improve during the season. The 'stros will be happy to finish around .500 and the Pirates will show some improvement and could finish strong.

    NL West

    Rockies
    Giants
    Dodgers
    Padres
    Snakes

Comments: Realistically, we are a .500 team in a division where that might get you fourth place.   The Rockies have pitching, have enough offense and an aggressive GM to take the division.   I see the Giants falling back as the offense is Posey and the Seven Empty Spaces.   If they don't trade Brandon Belt, I see him at first come Memorial Day.    I think this is the year that all the innings that Lincecum has put on his arm come back to bite them.   Still, they have depth on the farm and are willing to spend.  They will be in the hunt for the WC until the very end.   The Blue have too many questions.   I am not sold on the offense of the infield and I think that Kemp will see a lot more base on balls as the season progresses.  Do not be shocked if Ned moves two or three players like Billz, Broxton and Ethier at the deadline.   Money will be an issue all season long and expect the MLB to take over the team this summer.   The Padres will surprise some.   They still have lots of pitching and enough offense to make a run at third place.   The Snakes are just awful.   Hudson will be exposed as a decent 3/4 and the offense will be the worst in the league.   They will lose 100 games.

    AL EAST
    Red Sox
    Rays (WC)
    Yankees
    Blue Jays
    Orioles

AL East Comments: I like the Yankees lineup, but it's aging, and there's bound to be some decline from at least Jeter and Posada. I love CC, but seriously, who is taking the ball after him? That rotation is pathetic 2-5. They needed Cliff Lee so badly and I'm glad they didn't get him and aren't buying another championship this year. The Red Sox, however, may have done JUST that in picking up AGon and Crawford and adding them to Youkilis, Pedroia, Ellsbury, Big Papi and JD Drew. That's a really nice lineup. And they have great pitching. I like the Rays, but losing Garza AND Crawford has to hurt them at least a little.

    AL CENTRAL
    Tigers
    ChiSox
    Twins
    Royals
    Indians

AL Central Comments: I can't believe the Indians are behind the Royals here, but yep, that's what I'm picking. The addition of Adam Dunn to an already POTENT lineup makes Chicago just that much better and I think that they'll get some DECENT innings out of Peavy. Their rotation is good enough and their offense will carry them through some tough games in a very difficult division. I like the Twins, but I see some DL issues in their future with Mauer and Morneau not staying healthy. The Tigers have the right combination ... I'm seeing dueling aces in Verlander and Scherzer (AZ will REGRET that trade) and an offense led by the drunk---err, most powerful hitter in the game. Tigers win a DOGFIGHT and the other teams are too beat up to make the WC.

    AL WEST
    Halos
    Rangers
    A’s
    Mariners

AL West Comments: This division just kinda sucks. The Rangers will really miss Cliff Lee and either CJ or Colby will turn into a pumpkin ... they have possibly the best lineup in the game, but pitching is what gets you to the post-season. While I think that Wells will disappoint, I like the Angels young boppers and their stellar rotation. Big year for Dan Haren followed closely by Jered Weaver. Angels might take this division with 83 wins. The Mariners are GOD-AWFUL and I don't like the A's that much more ...

Championship Series: Red Sox v. Tigers
AL WS Rep: Red Sox (too much all around talent)

    NL EAST
    Phils
    Braves (WC)
    Fish
    Nats
    Mets

NL East Comments: Nice top three in the division ... I think the Nats aren't quite there and the Mets have too little talent and too many distractions to actually stay competitive. I think the Phils offense has a down year, but man, you just can't doubt that rotation. They could lose two aces and still compete for the division. Amazing. The Fish lack the pitching to stay in it, but I predict a MONSTER year from Stanton (who will be traded within 3 years). The Nats will get a nice year out of BOTH Zimmermans, but Werth disappoints. The Braves are a solid team with the potential to be excellent. Watch out.

    NL CENTRAL
    Brewers
    Cards
    Reds
    Bucs
    Cubs
    Astros

NL Central Comments: This is a tough, tough division to pick. In the end, the Brewers are too well-rounded to lose it. Great offense and really nice SP: Greinke, Gallardo, Marcum - I love it. I think Marcum, out of the dreaded AL East, will have a huge year and even Randy Wolf will catch the spirit and make a very decent 4th SP. I just can't pick the Cubs ... and the Bucs MAY finish in last this year, again, but I'm pulling for them and I think that James McDonald is going to get Ned Colletti fired. One can ONLY hope.

NL West Comments: I just don't see it. I wish I did.
But I just don't. Troy Tulowitzki wins the MVP and the Rockies cruise
to the playoffs with a big year at the dish and some nice pitching. I
think San Fran's offense falls apart, and so does Lincecum's arm ... and
Bumgarner and Cain give a nice effort, but just aren't enough.

I'll join in (for once!), but later tonight.  But before I do, I thought it might be funny to also add a category for guessing when (if?) McCourt sells.  That should be worth a ton of points.
  • To all future predictors: If you create your post in a word doc (like I did), then try to post it in here, it'll look weird.  Don't know why that is, maybe Doc can fix it.  But I found a trick: In the "Write comment" box, there is an icon - second from the right - that looks like a clipboard with a "T" on it. Click on that and paste your pre-written text in the little box that pops up.  It should format it better.  You can then edit for "bold" and underlines, etc.

AL East Comments: The Yankee offense makes everyone forget about their pitching woes. Jeter and A-rod put up usual, pre-2010 numbers. CC is the best pitcher in the division and the 2-5 do just enough to win on a nightly basis. They finish with 99 wins. The bottom 3 finish within 5 games of each other.

loneymiller and LA_Smack you are heros to me, 'cause you both gave me pause to dig out my beloved glove, smell the leather and dream of Championships of old.  '88 was a long time ago, but it too had many unanswered questions heading into that magical season... which, sitting here today, at least gives me reason for a glimmer of HOPE. Because without hope, we are left with nothing but a couple of McBattling McCourts...  In lieu of shrewd off-season moves, the Dodgers sent in the clowns... Perhaps someone can convince Commissioner Selig that his responsibility is to ensure that owners are fulfilling their obligation to each's respective fan base.  This in a country that is desperate for a little entertainment, in a world that has sadly become void of any such "fun".  Oh how I long for an epic and testy Dodger v Giant "war", where only one victim gets "stoned" (Don't worry, its just Little Timmy Lincecum, and he does it to himself!)... instead of multiple wars where our sworn enemy in one, is our ally in the next...  We deserve a little hope, indeed...

    Mr. Selig, are you listening...?
    _______
My pick?  Dodgers...  chalk it up to hope!

I used your template, Pastor, adding a couple of lines for each division.  It said 20K characters too long.  I then deleted all blank lines. Still 18K too long.  I could divide it into several posts, if that won't make it a super pain to count.
  • No, go for it, SA.  I'll see if I can fix it once it's done.
  • thanks for the fix

Before I put down my predictions for 2011 I need to say that I always pick the Dodgers to win the World Series.  I go with my heart usually and since I hate the Red Sox, Yankees and Giants, I usually keep them out of the playoffs too.  Not the most intelligent tactic, I know.  Also, I'm awful at this, so if you want to come on top on the point totals, you may want to predict in the opposite direction that I do.

I got confused ... haha.  I cut and paste your original template directly into the submission box here on the website - that's what I thought you meant.  I had difficulty with formatting before when I edited a post in a word document (these boxes are so small), but didn't do that this time.  I see someone fixed the post for me, though?  Thanks.

Nick, I fixed it for ya - no problem.  I have an ulterior motive in that it helps me if predictions are formatted in similar fashions to one another, for when I go back and evaluate them mid-season and in October.

    Have I won yet?
  • Man, this is a hard year to make predictions ... because hope actually doesn't spring eternal.

    AL EAST
    Red Sox
    Rays (WC)
    Yankees
    Blue Jays

    AL CENTRAL
    ChiSox
    Twins
    Tigers
    Royals

    NL WEST

    Rox
    Gnats
    Dodgers
    Pads
    Snakes

NL West Comments: I just don't see it. I wish I did.
But I just don't. Troy Tulowitzki wins the MVP and the Rockies cruise
to the playoffs with a big year at the dish and some nice pitching. I
think San Fran's offense falls apart, and so does Lincecum's arm ... and
Bumgarner and Cain give a nice effort, but just aren't enough.

Championship Series: Brewers v. Phillies (epic pitching matchups, Greinke MELTS, but still ...)
    NL WS Rep: Brewers

WS Winner: Red Sox (UGH, another Championship trophy BOUGHT AND PAID FOR)

I just noticed that I picked the Tigers in my commentary, but accidentally left them 3rd in the standings ... haha can I edit that?  I meant them to be on top, the rest of the division the same.

I'm feeling pretty good. Nobody picked the Indians to be on top of the Central, but they're starting to fade and my pick, the Tigers, are right there. The NL West is a MESS and I underestimated the Yankees (AGAIN), but that was probably more wishful thinking.
