The Offical 2011 Los Angeles Teams Playoffs Thread
  • jamesmir11jamesmir11 April 2011
Hello everyone, and welcome to the ridiculously long-named thread, "The Official 2011 Los Angeles Teams Playoffs Thread".

As you may or may not know, the Los Angeles Lakers are trying to defend their title, the Los Angeles Kings blew a 4-0 lead to eventually lose in OT but have bounced back in that series forcing a Game 6 here in L.A, and the Ducks just lost in OT to the Nashville Predators, whoever in here that is a Ducks fan.

Thoughts on any of the match ups?

    Here are mine

Lakers vs. Hornets - Lakers definitely didn't take the Hornets seriously as they lost Game 1 at Staples. I don't care what you say about the Lakers, but it's evident that a good point guard, or even a remotely good point guard, can tear up the Lakers with ease. Anyway, I still have them going to the Finals but losing to the Bulls.

Kings vs. Sharks - Wow! Well, not really, but 51 saves?! Where was that in Games 4 and 5? At least, they forced Game 6 and the Kings get to live another day. It's very clear that the injury to Kopitar is really hurting the Kings and he can't come back soon enough, if he ever does.

Ducks vs Predators - Sadly, I don't know enough about this series to make a comment, but, if you're a Ducks fan definitely make your voice heard!
  • Yay lakers!

Kopitar will be ready, next season.  Even if their season ends, tomorrow, the Kings made a statement, yesterday.
  • jamesmir11jamesmir11 April 2011
I'm hoping that somehow, someway, the Kings get by the Sharks and Kopitar makes an epic entrance against the Canucks. Thus propelling them into the Stanley Cup Finals.
  • ThrowdeuceThrowdeuce April 2011
Kopitar had surgery as he also had torn ligaments in the ankle, he'll be ready for training camp in late September, but no return in any round in the playoffs is possible.
Whatever the Kings do from this point on is gravy for me, I didn't expect more than one win in this series as they don't have the firepower to match the Sharks (yet somehow are outscoring them in the first 5 games).
Can't stand the Ducks (or more so their phoney fans who know less about hockey than the so called Angel fans know about baseball), glad they were elimanated today, good bye Quacks.

Wow, I hadn't heard that about Kopitar, well at least the Kings are doing well with the Sharks. I honestly was expecting a 4-1 series but the Kings proved me wrong. Quick was exceptional last game. We'll see how it goes tomorrow night, I can't wait.

Yes Quick was fantastic and he's the only reason this series isn't over, as the Sharks are twice as fast as the Kings are without Kopitar, hopefully he has two more games in him like that. I think the Kings match up better with any other team they'll play against in round 2 (and beyond) if they can get by the Sharks, although I'd prefer to play the Predators if I had my choice.
  • ocmike24ocmike24 April 2011
I called that one.  As soon as the Kings choked away the last of the 5 minute power play, I looked over at the kid and said "The Sharks score within a minute."
  • bigblasterbigblaster April 2011
The exact moment I knew it was over was during the first possession when the slipped the puck back over the blue line and had to regroup.  The wind went right out of the fan's sails and you could feel the pressure come right off the Sharks.

Great season and, now that my rookie year as a hockey and Kings fan is over, I look forward to next year.
  • jamesmir11jamesmir11 April 2011
And that's that for the Kings. Either way, can't wait for next year as I just bought myself season tickets.
  • ThrowdeuceThrowdeuce April 2011
Yep, Sharks just way too quick for the Kings the whole series. Kompon needs to go, bring in a better coach for their Power Play, Murray has one more year to get this team to the point of being Cup contenders, next year goals should be winning the division (or at least getting a better seed than 6th) and winning at least one round in the playoffs. A few more rookies come in from their deep farm to replace some of the vets (I think one of Smyth/Penner need to be moved to make room for some of their younger players and for the cap space). Need to sign Doughtry to a multi-year, multi-million dollar deal. No matter what, next year should be a fun and exciting time again, but 2012-2013 will be the year they are ready to make a cup run.

    Pathetic, yes.  Unbelievable?  Sadly, no.

    They're done.
  • They are.

And the Laker car flags are going down as we speak.

What a bunch of idiotic pansies...
  • MatthewMatthew May 2011
That's what happens when you decide to half ass it for most of the year... again.

He may be the "greatest of all time" (what a joke) but Kobe completely gave this one away in that series after  the Lakers were up 6.

Kobe is definitely one of the very, very best to ever play when it comes to pure ability and talent, but his basketball instincts/IQ have always been complete crap, and it's hardly ever talked about.  Mostly because when he's on, he's talented enough to make these insane/stupid shots he goes for, but when he's not...

And, by the way, why is it that Pau always turns into a scared little girl when the playoffs start?  Every freaking time.

You want to see Pau deck Phil?  Man, I saw it the other way around.  I love that Phil was getting in Pau's face ... I've never seen him do that before and it was completely deserved.  Pau played TERRIBLY, was never agressive and held the ball very gingerly leading to multiple turnovers in each game.  This is Phil Jackson's LAST RUN in the playoffs and he's going out because PAU GASOL played like a bitch.  That's a bad way to go out.
  • jWerthfanjWerthfan May 2011
Everything you say about Gasol is correct. But, yeah, I'd like to see it for a variety of reasons, mostly for the unexpected spectacle.

I'll admit I'm a lukewarm basketball fan at best, have no favorite team, and only watch the playoffs. I've always liked Nowitzky, and never cared for Jackson going back to his Bulls days. In much the same way Joe Torre rode New York allstars to a managing legacy, I see Jackson the same way It's not a close view, I grant you, but I feel certain many capable coaches could have rode Jordan/Pippen and Bryant/O'Neill into the hall of fame.

Besides, if you put aside the 'who's wrong/right factor, admit it: an out of the blue right cross from the suddenly timid Gasol to the suddenly macho master of zen's chin would have been terrific TV..
  • MatthewMatthew May 2011
Already down by 18 before the end of the half.  I get the feeling that shortly after, we're going to start hearing about some major things going on behind the scenes.  With the rumors surrounding Gasol right now and with Bynum saying there's no trust amongst the team, there are some major things going on.  They're just not playing like they trust each other.  At all.

And, for the record, I'll say it now: I think Phil will be back.  Not with the Lakers, but I think he'll come back to some team (Knicks?) after a year or so away.  No way he wants to go out like this.

And I don't think the jockers are going to like what they hear.
  • ocmike24ocmike24 May 2011
I will say I would get suspended so many times if I were a coach.  If I were the coach of the Lakers right now, Barea would be dead.  Dead. I'd have somebody come off the bench and break his frickin' smart-assed neck.

I'm not even watching, Mike, but what seems to be the biggest issue with the Lakers, today?  Pretty much the same deal as the rest of the series?

Finally took my instruction and completely cheap shotted that little piece of shit Berea.  Totally bush, but I loved every minute of it.  And someone needs to tell Tirico to STFU.

If you're Mitch, what do you do?
  • Andrew Bynum lost it right there.  That's not premeditated.  It's split second frustration showing itself, but there is no excuse for that
  • MatthewMatthew May 2011
By the way, am I the only one that, when seeing Mark Cuban celebrating at the sidelines, makes me not want him to be our new owner?  I mean, he seems like a good owner and I admire anyone who's a thorn in David Stern's side, but... I don't know... the Laker fan in me comes out when thinking of him buying the Dodgers.

Deal Pau for draft picks and maybe a serviceable 4, then package Bynum and draft picks for a solid PG (Chris Paul?) and SIGN DWIGHT HOWARD.  Reduce Kobe's minutes.  Championship.

I don't know if there is anything he can do.  Way too much money tied up in too few players.  Plus the horrid contracts of Walton and apparently Blake.
  • I'm a Laker fan, I don't have car flags, I didn't hop on this bandwagon in the 90's, and I won't jump off of this bandwagon when the Lakers lose this game, but I actually am a little relieved that the Lakers will not three-peat. I just think that there will be no pressure to repeat or continue a dynasty or whatever. It was nice while it lasted and so long to one of the best coaches in the history of the game.

I truly hope that when your disappointment and frustration eases, that you'll back off these comments.

"And the only thing worse than going out with your tail between your legs is going out like a punk in the process. "

That's one line, from this excellent commentary:
    http://espn.go.com/blog/los-angeles/lakers/post/_/id/19010/mavericks-122-lakers-86-at-the-buzzer

Note also the line about Bynum celebrating his cowardice. Championships earn players lots of money and fame - but never class, as this pitiful display illustrates perfectly.
  • ocmike24ocmike24 May 2011
    Sore losers?  Yes. Classless.  Certainly.

OK fine.  Really, really stupid thing for Bynum to do.
  • ocmike24ocmike24 May 2011
And just to be clear, I'm neither disappointed or frustrated.  The Lakers were beaten this week by a clearly better team.  Like Matthew said a few posts earlier, Kobe's physical ability has hidden a lot of bonehead moves over the years, and now that he is much closer to the end than the beginning, his mind can't keep writing checks that his body can't cash.

What I am is a HORRIBLE loser.  I'm completely from the school that says a good or compliant loser is a frequent and consistent loser.  It's the main reason I don't play anything competitively anymore.  Was too likely to end up face down against a fence somewhere so I just stopped.  What I hate more are mouthy winners, and that's what the little punk Barea was doing.  No excuse for how Bynum did what he did, and he really needs to watch tapes of Shaq to know how to hammer someone without it ending up being a cheap shot.

Odom's on the other hand, was complete BS.  Dirk won the Vlade Award for best fake job in the series for that one.

And I do think "class" is the most overused word in sports.
  • Totally agree with OCMike's assessment of the Odom/Dirk foul.  At 6'0", 200 lbs., I could lean into Dirk and get a reaction like that.  Every other player on the floor ignores that stuff or just similarly leans into the defender.

Some 7 footers get hacked and clobbered and never get the call.  Dirk is not one of them.

Apparantly most people don't see it that way - including Odom. From Yahoo Sports:

Down 27 with a little more than nine minutes left, Odom went to the free-throw line. After missing the first free throw, Odom shot a quick practice jumper before getting to his second free throw. Doing his best Kevin Garnett impression, Dirk Nowitzki swatted Odom’s shot hard to the delight of his laughing fans. Odom didn’t find it as funny. On the Mavs’ ensuing possession, he ran into Nowitzki hard with his shoulder. Odom was immediately ejected.

“I was a little embarrassed,” Odom said. “We were losing by 30. What the [expletive] do you expect?” Odom said.

I agree that class is an overused word in sports, but not because there's an abundance of it left. I congratulate Kobe Bryant for his post game comments.
