Howdy, Strangers
  • After over three weeks in the hospital, I am finally home.    Don't mind me if I get lost sometimes, a fractured skull will do that, or if I can't spell worth a damn (first time I have ever used spellcheck in my life), I am back.   I look pretty rakish with the right eye patch.  But fear not, I am scheduled for a pair of surgeries that should get the vision back to 20/200.  Can't say the same about my right kidney, it is toast.   Still in some pain because of the broken ribs and my right shoulder needs to be replaced again.   I guess I was not built for a Volkswagen to land on me.   That will teach me to not try to be a mechanic in a busy parking lot.

Find out something like this can make you emotional.   Some of it was pretty scary.   Waking up missing five days is scary enough, but having one of your favorite girls bawl like a baby when I finally woke up out of my minor coma was enough to change my view of life.   Being told I was read the Last Rites over twice and being somewhat aware of it happening isn't just scary, it is life changing.   Not that I will change that much, but I am going to try to be less opinionated on some issues and figure even Frank McCourt deserves a Mulligan.

Anyway, I am still going to try to keep up on the minor league stuff as best I can.   BTW, if you catch Mary around here, keep in mind that she is one strong lady.   The whole time she argued with doctors, nurses, etc.... when they said I would lose my right eye or that I would be lucky to not be a vegetable and never once listened to no.   I think I picked a winner.
  • Hey Torgy! I don't come around here much, but I noticed you were away and was worried. There are a few people on this board who I care about and you are one of them. I'm glad you are back and okay. Let me know if you need anything.

Welcome home.  The place hasn't been the same without you.
  • SamAdamsSamAdams May 2011
Good to have you back!  What a harrowing experience.  Hang in there and get well soon.
  • Glad to see you are back and you are on the upswing. Sounds like a pretty harrowing experience for your family.
  • I was very sorry to hear the news and wish you a speedy return back to 100% health. I hope you have a minimum of discomfort along the way.  What an ordeal!
  • Glad to have you, back, buddy.  Get well soon.

Welcome back, Torgy. Now make sure you have a really good attorney.

Good to see you posting again, Mr G. As to life perspective, I had to have emergency spinal surgeries last summer - I only remember the ambulance ride as I lost consciousness in route. A few days later, the surgeon told my wife and I that I was likely hours away from permanent paralysis, maybe a day or 2 from death. Being on a morphine pump, it was about a week later when I was fully impacted by that statement.

I don't think my view of life has changed, but I admit from time to time, I'm still overwhelmed by it all. I'm happy for your ongoing recovery, and that you have great support and encouragement within your family. That is a true blessing.
  • Torg, great to get the good report, considering.  So glad you're okay.  You've been missed, my friend.

So, Kyle, how is your own medical (mile)stone?
  • Still with me, Jerry.  The pain has been minimal since early Saturday morning.  But it hasn't passed fully through yet.  Heading to the urologist tomorrow morning.

Thanks, Shmol.  Given the situation, going the legal route would be a no win.   The kid who drove the vehicle is only eighteen and the fact that he was drunk, fled the scene and didn't have a license leads me to think that he will suffer more from a stay in prison than trying to pay for my medical for the rest of his life.   A worse punishment would be to let him spend thirty minutes in a room with Katja.   She would like to make him a eunuch.

Kyle, sounds like kidney stones or something equally painful.  Hope it goes away shortly.

Morphine is my friend, some days, but I am getting weened off of it.   Right now, my biggest hurdle, is sleeping through the day.   Today, fell asleep at a little after nine and just woke up, but the medico's say that is to be expected.   At least the headaches are not as severe and sometimes, when I try to see through my right eye, it is a lighter shade of red and I can make out some shapes.
  • God speed and quick recovery Torgy.  I'm sorry to hear about your difficulties.  prayers to you and your family as you battle through the recovery process.

Indeed it is.  Hey - did you get my email?  We need to catch up.
  • Hey Torgy,

Glad to hear you're ok. As Mike said, the place hasn't been the same without you. Your trenchant (not to say scatalogical) wit has been sorely missed. Hope you get well soon.

P.S. Correct spelling is vastly overrated.
  • I came back to find you weren't around. Welcome back and get well, bud. Does this mean I can go back into hiding now or does somebody have to piss me off again?

I was wondering where you were off to?  Nah, stick around, I have a feeling this season could make many of us pretty happy.

Getting ready for four hours of PT.   The biggest deal is walking a straight line - save your jokes for later, I have heard them, the girls are good for making fun of my condition and the fact that I hit furniture because my depth perception sucks.   Got a killer haircut at the hospital, shaved nearly to the skin.  It is a nasty look.  Today's big issue is the scare forming on my back from where they removed the kidney.   I would like to get a wire brush and do some scratching.  On the plus side, I get to wear shoes and I have two very pretty nurses to hold my hand at PT.    Katja took her vacation early and she and Mary are fighting on who gets to walk the invalid around.  Life could worse.

Sounds as if you have a good attitude and maintained your sense of humor through this horrible ordeal.  Attitude and sense of humor will go a long way to getting you through it.

I keep telling myself the same will work for Dodgers Vs.2011.
  • saeldway May 2011
Quite the scare there man.  For a second I thought it was an elaborate ruse and role play so you could have a Brazilian nurse by your side.  But for that you could have just gone with the Man Cold
Get well enough so that by Halloween you can use the eye patch for a nifty pirate costume instead of a device.

Good to have you back Grabs!
  • Geez, WTF!! Glad to hear that you are recovering....was wondering why you weren't around to give me a great big WELCOME BACK to the BBWC, now I know why!! Anyhoo, someone please tell me why I just had a vision of the game "Operation" in my head as I was reading your original post....first it was mental images of BPK's giant stone and it's journey to be passed (I'll never be the same ;-) ), now it's a big red flashing nose and a buzzing sound, cest la vie!! But seriously, glad to hear that you are doing better :-D :X
  • Chris, glad to hear you're on the rocky road to recovery... you had me worrying for a minute, there.  By my calculations, you'd been AWOL since about the time of the unfortunate beat-down of the alleged Giant fan, by alleged Dodger fans... and I was concerned you'd become a retaliatory victim, dare I say "collateral damage" in the Dodger v Giant war...!  Mind you, it would've been a noble death worthy of a Tommy Lasorda eulogy, but a death nonetheless...
    ---
Do you have an ironclad "last will and testament"?
    ---
Welcome back to the front lines, my friend...!  Are you still planning to buy the Dodgers...? (Oh, I wasn't supposed to say anything yet?  Sorry!)
  • So uh... I've been trying to piece this together through the thread notes, but the lack of facts is pushing all of my OCD buttons. Must... know... facts...

You were working under a Volkwagen (what model? what was wrong with it? what time of day?) in a busy parking lot when a drunk, license-less teenager crashed into the aforementioned VW that was up on a jack, sending the VW crashing down on top of you? Then the teenager drove off? (how did they catch him? how long did it take?).

By my calculations, I do believe that qualifies as a "bad day". Holy cow. Glad to hear that all your smashed bits are on the mend. Ribs, kidney, eyeball, brain... I'm just glad it didn't effect anything you really needed. :P

Speedy recovery, buddy. You've been missed greatly.
  • Back after Herself felt it was time to be scarce and rent an RV.  We ended up in Montana and Wyoming, froze my arse off, but no kids, no electronics and no cell phones.  Riding shotgun with Herself threw the Rockies was not the most enjoyable aspect of the trip.  But, we have not done a vacation for the two of us in a long time.  Ribs are healing, eyesight is coming back to the right eye, although the red veil is still prevalent. Get some nasty headaches when the air was thin.

Yeah, GF, my girl can run over a nail with the best of them.  She was parked behind her workplace at Barnes and Noble in Brentwood and some asshats were driving a beat up Jeep behind there when they came around the corner and clipped her Bug on the side having it tip on my head.   Lucky for me, the girl has one Helluva arm and nailed the rear window with a hammer.  She also has 911 on speed dial.  The funny part is she knows two of the kids because they hang out in front of Starbucks.  Brain is still kind of scrambled and I see Jamie is pulling the BK card.   Good on her.   Herself is unloading the RV, so she can return it tonight.   Enough fish in there to keep a good size Grizzly fed.   I think we fished every stream from Sacramento to Missoula. Trout, Stripers, you name it we caught it.  Nice thing about fishing is that it make most miseries go the way of the dodo.   Herself is not much for fishing but she got into it on the Pit River where she learned to flycast.   Seeing her in waders, trying to not hook her backside is worth the price of admission.  Of course is was snowing up on the Pit and she was dressed for Alaska in February.

Good for you! Life goes on. :)

Other than the pesky major injuries thing, I would be extremely jealous right now.  What a fun trip.

My dad's side of the family were from Montana.  Haven't been there since I was 15.  God's Country, though.  Absolutely beautiful.  Glad you're mending, man.  Need my buddy around so we can keep everybody honest.
  • Hi Blaster.   Say hi to Linda.   I would love to live in Montana.   Mountains and trees everywhere.  We looked at a place near Kalispell (I hope I spelled it right) that was like heaven.  Rivers, small animals and snow everywhere. But I have a policy about snow, I hate it.   If I see if for more than three days, I need to find some sun.   But, I could get into the fishing and nature walk thing in a second.

I think that is why Chris likes the idea of Vermont.  No people, rivers everywhere and the world moves a little slower.  I guess I am getting old.  I want time to slow down and just spend the rest of my days with Chris and wait for grandkids.  I think I would be the cool grandma who would spoil grandkids bad.  Wow, hit forty and plan for a rocking chair.

Kind of felt like some old fogeys driving an RV through the Rockies.   What is next?    Yelling at kids to get off the lawn.   No matter what Chris says, I can drive an RV.  I only scrapped one side of a hill and never once drove in the other lane.  Oh yeah, I only hooked my backside twice flycasting.   Better than Chris hooking the same tree three times.

    :P

Yes, this tropical girl would have to rethink that freezing thing.  I do not like snow, I do not like being cold and I do like slipping on the ice.   Back to the Virgin Islands for us.  It does not snow there, it is never cold and except for the odd hurricane, it should not be too bad.
  • Don't like the snow either....it's okay to look at and maybe spend a day or 2 in but beyond that, NO THANKS!!! I much prefer the sun and warm weather B-)

Now that I think about it more, so do I.   Playing in the sun is more fun and the only good thing about snow is that it melts.
  • HAHA, love that comment...."only good thing about snow is that it melts"....so agree with that. I can't wait for the weather to warm up here, been really weird the last few weeks....been wanting to go in the pool but it hasn't been warm enough for that, WTF :-? ....I need to get my tan on, I feel like Casper right now, I'm so damn pasty, YUCK!!
