Dominican Winter Updates 2011-12
  • gilmiguel55 October 2011
To be a baseball fan and having been born in the Dominican there is always baseball, the Dominican winter league starts in mid Oct and the World Series ends in late oct, so there is always baseball for me to watch, follow, etc.   This year i've had the pleasure of seeing Jerry Sands and Justin Sellers playing for the team that i root for "Tigres del Licey".

Sands: So far i've seen a very young kid (perhaps i am getting old) trying to hit every single ball out of the ballpark, Estadio Quisqueya was designed for baseball to be played during summer and wil very large dimensions, it is a pitchers park 335-385-411 with a very high wall, the fact that it was designed to play during summer and the league is a "winter" league makes the wind always be against the hitters, it is very difficult to hit it out of the park, Sands has hit the ball very far quite often (HR in every other park) but not enough for "Estadio Quisqueya".  He did hit one of the longest HR I've witnessed.

    Thanks for the update, Gil!
  • Where have they been having Sands play?  I have never paid much attention to the DWL, so I am unfamiliar with whether or not the MLB orgs have any say in where the players spend a majority of their time.

He is playing for Licey and I think I saw a game where he was playing right field.   With all of the brouhaha about Fox Deportes and Direct TV, it is all one can do to keep up on the DWL.
  • Thanks.  I should have been more specific as I meant position wise.  Hope he does not getting homer happy in this league after reconstructing his swing again.

Sands has been trying to hit the ball very far at least in his first days, lately he has cut off his swing a bit and the other day i saw him get the count to 0-2, work it to 3-2 and get game winning single.  He has been playing mostly LF but i've seen him at 1b (When Carpenter left the team) and in RF.  High strikeout ration 18 in 64ab.  234-2-10.

Sellers has a estomach ache and hasnt been playing lately, i wonder if he is still here.

Federowicz: Came in with a scouting report that he has good defense behind the plate and decent bat, it has been exactly the opposite, Federowicz has been hitting very well but his defense has been atrocious, he single handlely lost a game by making two poor throws to the bases in the 9th inning.  He has been hitting 5th and DHing.

Elian Herrera:  After a very good year he has been quiet this year, 241-1-2

Federowicz made a poor throw to first on a pickoff attempt in September and cost us dearly.  To be honest, and admittedly it's a snapshot, I have seen nothing about him that dulls the sting of the Trayvon Trade.
