Nicknames on the BBWC
  • grabarkewitzgrabarkewitz November 2011

I've also heard Colletti called "Flanders"

There are many that I've just come to know, but still don't know the reason behind it (Kuroda = Rusty?).  Brief explanations would be great.

I tagged Sheffield with SOD right after he demanded a trade because Bob Daley would bend over for him and give him a "lifetime" contract.

Girlier belongs to my daughter, Paula.  She saw the name on his jersey and that is how she pronounced it.  Seems to fit.

I still remember busting out laughing the first time I saw someone call Repko Pinball.  It was the most perfect nickname for a player, ever.
  • Chin+MusicChin Music November 2011

For some reason this nick stuck in my head for years - FOB for Luke Hochevar.    I know I tagged one relief pitcher Lit Match, but for the life of me I can't remember who.  It was either because he would give up four runs in a second or because I needed a cigarette as soon as he left the bullpen.

I know I joined the Auld Board around 2000, usually posting from my office while billing hours to some fool who was usually one step from the hoosegow.  I think the first poster I met was later known as Rameses.   Met Blaster and Dutch around that time also.  Damn, I miss Dutch.  He could dazzle with his baseball knowledge.  It seemed like there was little he didn't know.   Wow, I remember that the Auld Board was just brimming with great posters back then.   I think about half went to Dodger Thoughts and the other half followed us when Ben went despot on all of us.

Wow I always thought Rameses was one of your aliases after getting kicked off of the board so many times.

I don't know this bit of history, and a quick google and wikipedia search turned up nothing. Sounds like a great story - could you tell it?

haha  Ahhhh, the Auld Board days were a hoot at times. I remember the one off season/trading deadline periods on the board where we were chatting with one of the mods there as things were happening fast and furious.

I remember the LA Times board as well. Lots of great posters as well. Glad some are still with us. I remember posting there and on the Lakers thread as well.

Wasn't the new guy that took over for Ben Platt, Josh Ratwich <sp>, who went onto move up the ranks in the latest regime and I think I read where he went to go work with Derrick Hall and the Az Snakes.

Speaking of Derrick Hall, great guy. He just underwent prostate surgery a week or two ago. Best wishes to a speedy recovery!

GrudziesGirl?  Yeah, I remember her. I used to pester her by calling him (Grudz) "short bus".

Roberts was playing left and The Greatest European Player of All Time was playing center when some dufus came out of the crowd and starting approaching Roberts.  Romano, at full clip did a leaping cold cock to the side of said dufii's head, leaving him splayed out upon the field.

No telling what mayhem could have ensued if he did not intervene.
  • VicenteRomoVicenteRomo November 2011
Romano saved Brian Jordan from the fan that ran on the field that apparently wanted his autograph.  Dropped him in about one second flat. Something that any fan who wanted Brian's autograph deserved.

If I recall correctly, Romano also cured the world of SARS, rescued the space shuttle from disaster, took out the Taliban and balanced the National Budget.

Another forgotten nickname was Pigpen for Dave Roberts.

On another note, I met Ben Platt on Dodger Bloggers night last July.  We had about 15 minutes together and he actually was very apologetic about the demise of the Dodger board but said he was under orders from MLB to get it under control.

Josh Rawitch, was also there.  Organized the whole thing.  A McCourt apologist that refused to speak ill of the captain of the sinking ship.  I don't think Rawitch took over the message board from Platt though.  He had Gurnick's stint as the reporter for MLB covering the Dodgers and even did a short stint up in Frisco covering the Giants.  Rawitch was the Dodgers VP, Communications, having taken over the position from Derrick Hall when he departed for the DBacks after seeing what McCourt was all about.  Rawitch has since high tailed it out of Chavez Ravine as Hall hired him for the same position in Arizona.

    Thirsty: Casey Blake
    Jints: Giants
  • ocmike24ocmike24 November 2011
I could swear it was Roberts he saved.  I remember that something spectacular happened with Roberts in two straight games I went to, as the next time I was in the stadium he led off the game with an inside the park home run.  But the memory isn't what it used to be.......

And you are only scratching the surface of the humanitarian gestures bestowed upon the world by Jason Romano.

  • BluePastorKyleBluePastorKyle November 2011
A question: Are we making a list of nicks we at the BBWC refer to almost solely, or a list of nicks the entire sports world uses?  I'm thinking nicks like jints/gnats are used universally that aren't really special to the BBWC.  But names like Thirsty, Pigpen, and Stinky are perfectly applicable.  But I'll list them all if you all wish.
  • BluePastorKyleBluePastorKyle November 2011

    Thirsty: Casey Blake

    Jints: Giants

How did we forget THIRSTY!!!!???  One of my favorite nicks...

Or TMIMITW for Blake.  Even Lyons latched onto that one.

Link to story on Romano saving Jordan.  It was May, 2003.

  • VicenteRomoVicenteRomo November 2011
Hey, there's even video footage of it on you tube.  Romano dropped him fast!

  • kennerbuggy November 2011

Wow - look at that actual security presence and Romano decked the guy!

I don't think there have been that many security officers in total since McCockroach took over - and one of the evil spawn was likely named head of security ..... and paid hamdsomly !!

  • SamAdamsSamAdams November 2011
    Eric Gagne'--Goon
    Dave Roberts--DRob
    Jeff Weaver--Stoner
    Edwin Jackson--EJax
    James Loney--JLo
    VaGiants--SF

Sorry if I repeated any of these.

Pretty sure there were nicknames for Joe Beimel, Olmedo Saenz, and Angel Berroa, but can't recall them.

Nice thread about the nicks and down memory lane.

For those that might not know.  Olmedo Saenz - Big Sexy's nick was because whenTracy had no choice but to use him every day even though Olmedo was a little banged up, Tracy would ask him "how do you feel today Olmedo?"   He would respond  "I feel sexy."

Ben Platts is really a nice guy.   I run into him very often at the stadium.    When the Dodgers were looking to interview fans for the last issue of the Dodger magazine, Ben told me about it and gave me a name to contact (Jorge Martin)   I left a text with Jorge but he did not call me.   But after I took a pic with Javy Guerra during a Viva Los Dodgers Sunday, Jorge stopped me to asked me a few questions not knowing I was the one that had left him a text the week before.   When I saw his name tag I told him.    Anyway, I was surprised when I saw it in the  magazine with a two page coverage. When I ran ito Benny again I told him "Did you see the magazine?"  He said "yes, I created a monster"    but I don't think so.  I am no moster,  just a fan.   I did put the entire article in my blog

It's a bit pricey, but any true Dodger fan who can turn loose of $40 ($25 for the digital version) should subscribe to Dodgers magazine.  The editor, Jorge Martin, is a class guy and a real Dodger fan himself.  (I had the pleasure of meeting him in Vero Beach and that's how I found out about it.)  Everything about the publication is first class and in addition to the entertainment value, I learn something new in every issue.  They make great Christmas gifts, so any of the wives like Phillie Blue or The Brazilian should consider this as the gift that keeps on giving year round.  I'm going to surprise my sister with a subscription.  You can order here:

If you want to wait until after the sale of the team, I would understand.

You guys are awesome.  One correction for KB: The EZBoard's creation was definitely pre-2005.  Likely more like 2002-2003.  I joined the Auld Bored around 2000, and noticed the rapture of good posters around 2002.  The dates are stuck with me due to where I was at the time.

Though I only seldom post, there are not many days that pass when I am not on this site multiple times a day. I agree with the time line as I relate it to personal experiences. My daughter was born in 2000 and my son in 2003. I know that our "new board" was introduced christmas day around the time my son was born. I remember it being tagged as a "christmas present" to anyone who was not a moderator to start with. Christmas morning the new page even had snowflakes on the main page. I followed from the Auld board as my favorite baseball rumors always were delivered by the Bulander. I do not remember what my first tagg name was as I had a computer crash that did not allow me to find my original password. I had to re register with TX Dodger as I relocated from HB to DFW and still wear my Dodger gear anytime the Blue play the Rangers. I very much enjoy the long time posters such as Torgy, KB, BB, Pastor and the like which is why I jumped in on the FF league we are in.

We can all see who's the resident nick name giver. :)

I started posting on the auld board around the turn of the millenium under a different moniker - I think it was truebluejew. I can't believe we've been posting on this board for 10 years now. Wow. I definitely need to show up to the next board game outing. Do we still do those?

i used to call Beimel the "Nightstalker" well because . . . . look at him. small resemblance to Ramirez.
in Pee-wee's Big Adventure, Pee Wee goes over to that fat rich kid's house named Buxton and Pee Wee pronounces it Bux-TON!!!
    i call Broxton - Brox-TON!!!
Saenz was the "Plumber" because he looked like your everyday guy
Loney has  a first name of BA - Loney

How about Brox-TON and a half?
Olmedo would have no problem producing a bad "plumber's crack."
    Only the Loney?
  • True2DaBlue December 2011
I liked Delwyn Young's (Panda) nickname for Loney: Weird Game James

I called Broxton "Fat Elvis". For his southern roots, those funky sideburns and that lip thing he has when he smiles and talks.

Olmedo to me was "That Tomato F'er". Just felt so right.  lol

Pierre was "Beetlejuice" from the Howard Stern show.

AJ Ellis and especially Danny Ardoin (former backup C) reminded me of Andy from the office (Ed Helms).

Bellasario's mug and especially his mouth and teeth had me calling him "Barracuda". Would have been great if that was his entrance music coming out of the pen.

SoD (Spectre of Doom): Gary Sheffield

    A.God: Andre Ethier
    'Dre: Andre Ethier

    Nomah: Nomar Garciaparra

Also, since when is * listed under ex-Dodgers?

I still refer to Sheffield as SofD.  I also call Juan Uribe "Flabby McPopup"  Same disorder, different weight class
  • Adding my "GeeGees" for the Guggenheim ownership (Lots of "g's" in the name.  Lots of "g's" spent for the team).

For some reason, I'm reminded of an early episode of "Frasier", when Niles' wife's Aunt Patrice comes to visit and she weirds everyone out by trotting out this party game called "G speak".  The premise of the game is to put the letter G in every syllable.  So our new ownership would be G'Guggenhgeim, headed by M'gark G'Walgter, Stgan Kagstgen and G'Magic Joghnsgon.
