With shoulder surgery possible, Gallagher's season may be over

It basically says that Gallagher has a torn labrum in his right (throwing) shoulder and has been in pain all year. We finally have a reason for the poor numbers.

First I had heard. I knew he was on the DL.

Sorry Torge! I knew that and thought I had posted it. It was pretty well decided early on. He was trying to play out the season and then have the surgery, but it got too painful and that was when they put him on the DL.

No big, I haven't been keeping track of who is and who isn't playing, lately. I know Gordon has missed the past couple games, but noticed that Anthony Hatch was getting the lion's share of the playing time at third and Jerry Sands was playing first lately.
Speaking of Great Lakes, how 'bout Aaron Miller? Six innings, no hits, no walks, only one base runner, five strikeouts. Damn!

I've listened to all of his games and he seems gets more confidence each time out. Granted he's a southpaw and new to the league, so no one has any real book on him yet, but having said that, he has been throwing very well and has been a real plus to the Loons, who started the season with all right handed pitchers. BTW, they now have a magic of one with Dayton to reach the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.
From the Baseball America Hot Sheet this week:
No. 4 AARON MILLER, LHP DODGERS
Team: low Class A Great Lakes (Midwest)
Age: 21
Why He's Here: 0-0, 0.00, 11 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 10 SO
The Scoop: When the Dodgers selected Aaron Miller with a supplemental first-round pick, scouting director Logan White said he believed that Miller would take off now that he could focus entirely on pitching. After all, he spent nearly all of of his freshman and sophomore seasons at Baylor as the Bears' right fielder. White's looking pretty smart right now. Miller has shown improved command and solid stuff since arriving in Great Lakes in early August. Considering how impressive Miller has been in six MWL starts, he's positioned himself to start the 2010 season in high Class A.
Sixers got no hit by three San Jose Giant pitchers. It was plenty ugly, fourteen k's.
I'll play the radio on Southern stations because Southern Belles are Hell at night...Gould pitched his first professional inning last night and looked pretty good from the reports I heard.
Couple notes from around the Dodgers minor leagues
- Chris Withrow is #8 on this weeks BA.com Hot Sheet
- Tim Wallach (AAA - Albuquerque Isotopes) has been named PCL Manager of the Year
- Garrett Gould made his debut with the Ogden Raptors and pitched a scoreless inning without giving up a hit or walk.
Scott Van Slyke got moved up to triple A.
This could signal some more interesting moves!
Edit: Oops, wrong thread.
Interesting take on some of our prospects. http://www.minorleagueball.com/2009/8/31/1007246/los-angeles-dodgers-pre-season-top
KB,
Got a distant view of the Reno ballpark today from the plane. Even from a distance, it looks better than Cashman. Had to make a trip up and back in a day.
I'll be up there on the in a couple of weeks for a few days.

I didn't make it to a game this season, as so much else was going on. I am hoping things are calmer next year.
People I have talked to who have attended games there really like the park, so it is something I want to check out. It's about an hour drive from where I live, so that is a factor in how convenient it is to go.
Every silver lining has a cloud.Couple playoff games, last night. The Topes only could scratch out three hits while Eric Stults got his backside handed to him as the Redbirds took a 6-2 decision. Better news in the Midwest League with Aaron Miller tossing six innings of two-hit shutout ball and Kyle Russell added a bomb to lead the Loons to a 7-2 win in their playoff opener.
I'll play the radio on Southern stations because Southern Belles are Hell at night...Aaron Miller goes tonight for the Loons at 7:10pm EST in the deciding game of the Semi-Finals of the Mid-West League playoffs.
Well the Loons lost on a GW homerun by Fort Wayne catcher, Robert Lara in the 10th off Cole St. Clair, but Miller was excellent.
He went 6 innings and allowed only 1 run with 3 BB and 4 SO.
Wherever out AA affiliate is next year, it is going to be stacked. We may be looking at a repeat of the 2005 Suns. I would figure the following folks would be there.
C Lucas May (he may move up)
1B Andrew Lambo (he has to repeat right?)
2B Sergio Pedrozza
SS Dee Gordon
3B Anthony Hatch
LF Scott Van Slyke
CF Trayvon Robinson
RF Kyle Russel
DH Steven Casseres
SP Aaron Miller
SP Chris Winthrow
SP Ethan Martin
SP Josh Walter or Nathan Eovaldi
SP Tim Sexton
CL Cole St Clair
I doubt that Martin, Eovaldi and/or Walter would skip Inland Empire just based on age and experience over some other pitchers in the system.
I would love to see Lambo get more reps at 1B. I could see him easily replacing Loney in a year or two once he starts making too much for the HR production he provides.
Also, while Hatch is an older prospect, I doubt Baez spends another year at Inland Empire.

Walter is 24, IIRC, and I believe he is also close to Rule V status, so it might be to the Dodgers' benefit if he can show what he can do at an advanced level. I doubt we can waste roster spots with players like Van Slyke, Baez and others due roster spots because of their length of service.
I'll play the radio on Southern stations because Southern Belles are Hell at night...If Walters jumps to AA, I just not sure that it would be as a starter. I could definitely see him there as a set up man.

CA - I doubt Lucas May spends a 3rd year in AA, after rebounding offensively this year. He should get the bump to AAA. We don't really have a catcher ready for AA so we may go outside the organization with a minor league Free Agent.
SS - Similar to the catcher position, I think we go outside the organization with a minor league Free Agent filler until Gordon is ready. I see him starting off the year at Inland Empire for about 50 games or so.
DH - Caseres will probably get the majority AB's here, but Van Slyke, Russell and Lambo should see some action here as well due to defensive rotations.
Baseball America - AZL Top 20
Three Dodgers made the list ....
03. RH Allen Webster – 6’2” 165 – R/R – Age: 19 – Drafted: 2008 (18th Round)
No AZL player boosted his prospect stock this season as much as Webster, who's listed in the MLB database by his first name (Carl) but prefers to go by his middle name. An 18th-round pick in 2008, he walked 17 batters in 18 innings during his first pro season in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League. After moving to Arizona when the Dodgers shifted their complex-based affiliate, he posted a 56-14 K-BB ratio in 48 innings before continuing to excel following a promotion to the Rookie-level Pioneer League.
Though Webster still is growing into his 6-foot-2, 165-pound frame, he already has a fastball that reaches 94-95 mph. He throws strikes with his heater, as well as with a plus breaking ball and a promising changeup that he needs to use more often.
Dodgers pitching instructor George Culver said an improved delivery was the key to Webster's big step forward.
"He had a lot of issues with it last year. He was a green pea," said Culver. "His mechanics right now are as good as you want to see with a kid with no more pitching experience than he's had."

09. OF Jonathan Garcia – 5’11” 175 – R/R – Age: 17 – Drafted: 2009 (8th Round)
The Dodgers may have gotten a steal when they selected Garcia out of Puerto Rico in the eighth round of the 2009 draft. He had a reputation in high school as a player who was better in workouts than in games, but that wasn't the case in the AZL. He hit .304 with 16 doubles in 138 at-bats.
Garcia, 17, is very aggressive at the plate and the ball jumps off his bat. He has power to all fields and is expected to get stronger. He worked closely with hitting coach Leo Garcia and continually made adjustments during games.
Garcia doesn't have the speed to play center field, where he saw some action in Arizona, but his plus arm should allow him to handle right field. He has below-average speed but could get quicker with better technique, as he currently runs on his heels.
"He's a hard-working kid," Dodgers manager Jeff Carter said. "He wants to learn and has fun playing the game."

19. RH Danny Danielson – 6’4” 220 – R/R – Age: 20 – Drafted: 2007 (7th Round)
Danielson is a product of Russell County (Ala.) High, the same school that produced first-round or sandwich picks Kasey Kiker and Colby and Cory Rasmus. A seventh-rounder in 2007, Daniels pitched just 30 innings in his first two years as a pro. After losing 30 pounds in the offseason, he completed an entire season and managers noted his ability to put hitters away.
"This is the first season we've had him healthy through the whole season," Culver said. "He's made huge strides. He's been a pleasant surprise."
Danielson's fastball topped out at 88-89 mph in 2009, though he reached 93 in the past. His best pitch is an outstanding changeup, and he also uses a big, slow curveball. Culver believes that Danielson will need a harder breaking ball in order to remain a starter, so he may switch to a slider.

Notes from Chat:
John (Los Angeles): Did Dodger prospect Nick Akins get any consideration for the top 20, or did his age play a factor?
Bill Mitchell: Akins got a lot of consideration. While he's already 21 he's still relatively inexperienced in that he hasn't played at any big baseball programs. When it came down to cutting the list, I didn't include him not so much because of his age but because he's likely to be strictly a left fielder. He's very athletic and was well respected this summer. His manager said that he believes that Akins can move quickly. But for me it came down to the defense.
--
JR (valencia, ca): What other Dodger came close to making this list? Any sleepers we should keep an eye on? Did Nick Akins come close to cracking the top 20?
Bill Mitchell: I mentioned Nick Akins in a previous post. The guy who came really, really close was pitcher Carlos Frias. He's got a very good arm, hitting 96 with his fastball and has an excellent changeup. Command of the breaking ball is his biggest area for improvement. He's still relatively inexperienced but made great progress this year. A year from now I may be kicking myself for not slotting him onto the list somewhere.
Schedule of Top 20's where Dodger's have an affiliate
09/28/09 - Pioneer League (Ogden Raptors - R)

Why do I think that Brian Carvazos-Galvez will be among the top three prospects in the Pioneer League? Oh yeah, led the league in rbis, xbh, sluggling percentage and among the top ten in home runs, batting average and can run for a big guy. I would bet that Wise, Songco and Ames get votes also.

I am betting that JT Wise may get a big jump to this level. His age and a need at the ML club is gonna force the Dodgers to move him pretty quickly. The other possibility is Alex Garabedian, who looks like roster fodder, but put up decent numbers and given the paucity of good catching on the farm, he may get the job by default.
At shortstop I think it is safe to say we agree. If we resign Justin Sellers, he could be a possibility, but I would have to think we will sign a six year free agent to hold the position for a couple months until Dee Gordon is ready for the jump.
The last pitching spot looks like a place to see if Josh Wall can finally channel his potential, if we don't lose him in the Rule V or Jon Michael Redding gets to skip a level because of his w-l record.

If it is a current Dodger prospect, I am leaning toward Garabedian. I have Wise slated for Inland Empire. He mashes lefties, but still needs some work with RHP. Gorman Erickson (Wise's battery mate this year at Ogden) should be the starting catcher at Great Lakes. This of course will be very much contigent on whether DelMonico stays behind the plate, or now that Josh Bell is gone he is moved to the hot corner. If he stays behind the plate, then DelMonico is the starter at Inland Empire and there may be a log jam behind him at Great Lakes with Wise and Erickson sharing the duties again. Long term, I really like Erickson. Wise to me looks like a nice back up capable of starting 40-80 games based upon the starter and injuries.
Where do you guys see DeJesus playing in '01?

Fighting for the second base position at Spring Training if we don't acquire Polanco, Uggla or Brian Roberts. I figure his only competition will be Hu or DeWitt (if we do not trade either).
