James, are you at the game? I sent Robert an email that he might run into a Japanese speaking Portuguese from Osaka tonight, but I don't know if he was able to get it in time....

Just in case it didn't go, I can't go. I'm in Riverside right now. Who is the Japanese speaking Portuguese? But, I'm going to go soon and when I do, I'll definitely get an autograph from your son before he goes to the Dodgers!

So, how did the badger come about?Well, first of all, the Spam and Mullets thread used to be way livelier and more active and more interesting than it is now. Some of our former posters squared off in a fun "boys vs. girls" battle of supremacy (BAM!), lots more good-natured insults, etc. Part of it all was putting up funny (and often off-color) pictures, vid clips, etc. One day, I had stumbled on the badger badger badger video and posted it. It got lots of responses, but the odd part was that every time we posted it up, the Dodgers would win.

The Badger became our mascot, after that. We also had other ones we'd post up by the same guy (Only in Kenya and Magical Trevor, for example.) We call the Badger back whenever we need our mojo to rise.

I miss the old S&M days with Foxy, Siousxie, Oscar and 'Zul.

I'm not sure. It does not appear to be normal Japanese. Maybe machine translation?. I read it as: "Something, or somebody is the envy of all (of the great and mighty). But ranting and raving about (Him or them) has about as much effect as a bullet on superman..."

Could that further be translated to mean that you are saying that you be da man and are telling me to stuff it?

Paula's grasp of Japanese is still on the novice stage. It was supposed to say that all are envious of the Torg, but all your complaining has the same effect on him as bullets do on Superman. She is trying to learn the language off of my Rosetta Stone set and having better luck than I am. I can barely get through a decent greeting or ordering a meal. It was easier to learn French...I still wonder what possessed me to learn that language.
  • JamesMiranda April 2010
Rosetta Stone is good if you want to learn only a set and definite amount of phrases and words, not if you want to become fluent, because there's a whole lot of grammar that isn't taught. But, it's a great way to get a headstart in a language, or if you're struggling to learn a few phrases before an important business meeting and you're in the plane.

That is the one problem I am seeing with it. There are so many nuances with the Japanese language that befuddle me to death. Inflection, tone, context, etc.... I can say the words, but because I have no clue on the grammar or context issue, I am completely flummoxed. French was so much easier. Paula seems to have a clue about the grammar thing only because one of her best friends at the hospital is from Osaka and she is getting her through the rough spots during their lunch breaks. My problem is that I do not know anyone who speaks Japanese as a first language to guide me through the things I will not learn on Rosetta Stone. For all my years doing the law thing, I never had the luck of making contact with Japanese attorneys. Met a s'load of Chinese, Korean and Taiwanese attorneys, but never one from Japan.

I'm probably not the one you want to talk to about help with the Japanese language. Maybe many, many years ago, fresh out of Japanese language training and a Japanese University it would have been okay. Now after all the years in country, I speak it like a perverted longshoreman, albeit with a Chicago accent. Robert, who is still learning English, might be a better choice (BTW Miller and Robert got their socks knocked off agains Stockton today : )

Pretty darn good. Hey, Hoag is opening a new hospital in Irvine. I think they're already posting the public positions.
  • bigblasterbigblaster April 2010
Stuck in the Valley until November. Not sure toes would be into a commute like that.
  • oml1200oml1200 April 2010
No kidding. I went from commuting to Calabasas from Azusa, to Newport Beach from Azusa. The commute would suck for sure.
