It looks like the Lakers, Hornets, and Rockets are restructuring the deal so that it appeases everyone and it still gets done. I don't see how Stern blocks the deal a second time. Will be keeping you all posted.
  • GenericFan December 2011
I don't see how they structure the deal so that it's allows the league to change their mind without it being a total ripoff against the Lakers.  I was already questioning whether or not Chris Paul was worth giving up two all-star big men.   Such a trade would only make sense if a deal for Dwight Howard was already done.  They can't go into the season relying only on Bynum.
  • True2DaBlue December 2011
They are saying that the players going to the Hornets in this 3 team deal were not young enough. Okay, that makes no sense. So, our part was Odom and he is 32 and the other players involved were 31,28 and 25. Me thinks they want us to cough up some draft picks or deal Bynum instead?

    This is a mess!!!

Oh yeah, reports also are that Dwight Howard has "selected"  three teams as to which he wants to go to. The Nets, the Mavs and the Lakers.

Maybe the reason why that Cuban gave such a stink about the Paul trade was that we'd have the main piece to get Howard (Bynum) and if they made us deal Bynum in the Paul deal, that would be erased.

Hmmmm.....maybe more than meets the eye in all this?

Just catching up on this and it seems what has the league frosted is that the Lakers get a trade exception, which in the new CBA is like gold, in the Paul deal and there is talk that if they make the Howard/Bynum deal they will get another trade exception.

The thing is, the Lakers appear to be playing by the same rules as the other teams in the league and there doesn't appear to be any hanky-panky going on.   I mean, the Hornets get three starters, the Rockets get an All Star power forward/center and one could opine that the Lakers get the short end of the stick as they get shorter and it isn't like Paul, by himself, makes the Lakers that formidable.   Now, if the Lakers can somehow parlay this deal to get Howard and managed to use both trade exceptions to get, for instance, Okafor and Kevin Love (not happening, but you get my point), then the league could question the deal, but killing the deal because of what might happen, is wrongheaded at best.

I was listening to 710 espn yesterday, and the guys on the air were saying they know Mitch Kupchek well and he's a boy scout.  They say he will stretch to the limit of a rule but would never knowingly break one.  Dot the i's and cross every t.  So, the only reason the other owners are pissed is that it's the Lakers and THEY didn't manage to pull it off.  Paul wants to be a Laker.  He clearly doesn't want to play in Cleveland or OKC.  If he did, he'd stay in New Orleans.
  • True2DaBlue December 2011
Okay, the trade has been resubmitted by the Hornets back to the NBA. It will be interesting to see the changes made and what (if anything) Stern will say on it. The players involved that the Lakers were trading were a lot to lose IMO and well worth it on our side. If they request more for the Lakers end, I'll be bummed.

Edit: Maybe the NBA wants the Lakers to add Kim Kardashian along with Khloe and Lamar?
  • True2DaBlue December 2011
Looks like the changes will be made on the NO and Laker side of the deal. Houston's part of deal staying the same (reported). And, Okafor might part of the deal coming to LA to satisfy the need for LA to take back more $.

Now, if he could be added with Bynum to Orlando for Howard???

Why can't our Blue have this much excitement?????
  • bigblasterbigblaster December 2011
Let's see if Davey has the cojones to stand up and reject this one, too.  My guess is, he'll swallow hard, blink twice and approve it.  He's still digging out of a sh*tblizzard as it is.

And now it's being reported that Dwight Howard has officially requested a trade.  Looks like this is very close to happening.  Or things can explode.

And if the NBA wants Kim and Khloe, no problem!  Hell, let's throw in the whole damn family!

Seems like Howard wants to go to the Nets. Haven't we heard this tale already?

Are David Stern and McCockroach related?

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=aw-wojnarowski_howard_requests_trade_magic_nets_121011

    ------------------------------------------

The Magic are still focused on a possible trade to the Lakers, sources said, for a package that would include Andrew Bynum. The Magic want to unload Hedo Turkoglu in any deal that includes Howard. The Nets, flush with salary cap space, would likely take Turkoglu into a deal.

Howard prefers to the Nets over the Lakers, but hasn’t ruled out the possibility that he would sign a long-term extension with L.A. should he be traded there.

At this point, I think Stern will eventually approve the Paul trade, once he's certain Howard goes to NJ.  It's become incredibly obvious that he's going to do everything possible to prevent both from going to L.A.

On the other hand, I wouldn't imagine Orlando is fond of a Brook Lopez/picks package.

Either way, this whole situation is sickening.

Totally agree. Ric Bucher from ESPN said that he thinks this deal won't get approved until Monday and that there is a real good possibility that there will be a 4th team involved, to add the draft choices, etc to make it appease Stern.

I cannot believe that Stern will be allowed to effectively dictate who, when, and where players are going to be sent in such an obvious fashion.

Of course, being a Laker fan, this really peeves me. OTOH, I'd be peeved even if it were another team. The first trade is/was good for all teams. His delay tactic reeks of collusion.

  • MatthewMatthew December 2011
    This gets crazier...

Breaking now that the Lakers have pulled out of the Paul talks and have instead traded Lamar Odom to Dallas for their traded player exception.

Looks like the Lakers have to be going all in on Howard, now.  I could see them now going for a Howard/Billups combo.  Then again, at this point, I don't have an F'ing clue what's going on.
  • True2DaBlue December 2011
Talk about a cluster fog? Thanks to Stern and the "owners" of the Hornets, they effectively screwed the Lakers, Rockets and Hornets of making a trade that HELPED all three teams.

I still think there will be some sort of legal action ahead.

Trading Odom raises more questions. Not sure what exactly the Lakers get with this (draft pick(s) and trade exceptions are a few rumors floating). Why trade him to an arch rival for so little in return without having a plan B, C, etc.?

One GM said that Odom really wanted out after the rumor and the Lakers really wanted to reduce their tax bill.
I can't help but think that the Lakers FO has other deals lined up after figuring out they weren't getting Paul. Whether it's Howard is another question that remains unanswered up til now.

I am hoping that after all the dust settles, that the Lakers will have at least Howard and other pieces that outweigh what they are planning to trade.
  • jamesmir11jamesmir11 December 2011
No one wants to deal with the Hornets with Stern being God over there. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo!Sports, he blocked TWO deals for Chris Paul.

Paul will eventually become a free agent and the Hornets will have nothing to show for it.
  • grabarkewitzgrabarkewitz December 2011
Howard for both Bynum and Gasol seems too pricey for me.  I am thinking that Bynum and three first round picks (our 2012 and 2013 and Dallas' 2012) could get the deal done, if they take Turkoglu.    I am sure the Lakers can get a real point guard with the trade exception.

That's what I'm thinking also. That is, IF after the dust settles, we indeed have the extra picks and the trade exception. It seems details on the Odom trade are fuzzy as far as what we actually get back. Some say just the pick(s) and some say the exception is included.

Either way, this Laker squad will be a lot different looking.
  • ocmike24ocmike24 December 2011
Just my own opinion, but BongLoad sealed his own fate 18 months ago when he married into the circus.
  • True2DaBlue December 2011
Wow...who woulda thunk it. Just a few days ago, we were thinking that the Lakers would be getting an all-star PG in Chris Paul and saying adios to Odom and Gasol.

Now, the trade is squashed and Odom is gone and we get a 2012 Dallas 1st round pick and their $8.9M trade exception. According to stories, there wasn't a lot of interest in Lamar. And, don't overlook the saving of $ in this deal.

Looks like Odom requested a trade both Friday and yesterday (agent). Now Kobe is miffed about losing Lamar and to their chief rival.

Not exactly the way we envisioned the start of camp?
  • True2DaBlue December 2011
    Odom trade official.

I see where Gilbert Arenas is saying that he prefers to sign with whatever team Dwight Howard plays for.

I am not advocating him on the Lakers!  Just a what-if scenario.

Now, Chris Paul is saying that if he can't play for the Lakers (Kobe) or Knicks (Melo), he would prefer to play at Staples Center...with the Clippers (Blake). So close and yet so far if that happens.

  • Vinsandlosses December 2011
If the Lakers get Howard and the Clips get Paul, I might have to move back to Los Angeles.  I'm already buying LAC @ GSW.  Maybe I should hold off and just buy some home LAC games.  Paul, Griffin, and DeAndre?  Hell yeah.
  • True2DaBlue December 2011
Who knows, maybe the Clippers will be using Staples more this year (playoffs) than the Lakers will.

Looks like the Lakers added a 2nd round draft pick to the deal as well. So, Odom and a 2nd rounder to the Mavs for a "protected" 1st rounder and the $8.9 trade exception. Wouldn't be shocked if they don't even use it.

Edited: looks like the Lakers also added 2nd round draft considerations in 2013. It just keeps getting better!

Well, taking it away from Dallas is also a strategy.
  • True2DaBlue December 2011
The OTHER basketball team in LA and Hornets just submitted the trade proposal to the NBA for Chris Paul. Lets see if this one flies. I am thinking it will. The Clips would send Eric Gordon, Caveman (Kaman) , Aminu and Minnesota's 1st round pick.

This story says the "Hornets" (the league, of course) wanted Eric Bledsoe instead of Gordon and that deal would've been done if so. I think Gordon is a better player anyway, so that seems strange.

Anyway, it's the NBA. It's FANtastic!

  • True2DaBlue December 2011
According to Broussard, the Hornets (STERN) wants Bledsoe AND Gordon, Kaman, Aminu and that Minny 1st round pick.

I am way more a Laker fan than Clipper fan, but I think the Clips are getting hosed in this one. I thought the Laker trade was too much, but this one is way lopsided.

I can see if either trade was bad for the sake of the Hornets, but this is plain ridiculous.

Edit: Okay, Yahoo is reporting that Gordon is not part of this deal. I give up on this drama!!!!

So the Clippers get Paul. Good for them. I hope he does well and they become relevant. Until then, all the anointing of them being the best team in LA, etc. is way premature. Lets win something first!

All this BS that the Lakers went through without getting either Paul nor Howard (still holding hope) makes me wonder if a deal can be made between the Lakers, Magic and Rockets to appease all teams?
    Something like:

    LAL- Howard, Turkoglu, Dragic

    Orlando- Bynum, Scola, Patterson (Hou)

    Rockets- Gasol

Orlando gets 3 big men (1C and 2 PF), Lakers get a C, SF and PG and the Rockets get Gasol (who they really wanted in that Paul/Laker trade). Can throw in draft picks, exceptions to make it work.

ESPN has that trade matching app where you can play GM and make hypothetical trades. This trade works under the restrictions.

    Boy, CP3 can really play.

Not just better, but more well rounded than I've ever seen.  Beyond the Paul and Griffin duo, Billups should be their best 3pt and spot up shooter.  Butler looks healthy, which gives them a very good fourth scoring option, inside or outside.  Defensively, Cp3 and Jordan are strong (perhaps one the teams weaker areas), Billups, Blake and Butler should be average.

Mo Williams looks excellent as a 6th man - really needed to spell Chauncy and Chris for a couple half quarters.

They are missing a backup center.  One, like Birdman, who is an energy player and can make 60 percent or more from the stripe would be a perfect fit.

Unfortunately, the same old Kobe.   You draw four guys to you in the last seconds and can't pass the ball underneath to Gasol?   As for Fisher, time to retire.  Too bad that Farmar was allowed to go a couple years ago, they could've used him.   I cannot complain about Murphy, McRoberts or Ebanks, they played well and the bench, save Artest, was better than I expected.  Still, Kobe needs to stop being a black hole where the ball goes and is never seen again and someone needs to work on free throws with this team.

Every team, even the Kings, can look good against the Warriors.  Let's see how they do when they face a team that can actually play defense.

Wow! A lead with lead than a minute to go and they blew it., that game should have been in W column. They imploded in the last minute.

Yeah, looks like Kobe seemed to be in that "just me" mode most of the time. Eight turnovers and not passing the ball when he should have was a major reason they lost. Hope he can come to grips that he still has 4 other teammates on the court.

Oh yeah, woeful FT shooting as well. Still, minus Bynum and so darn close to winning. Ebanks did okay as well. Gouldelock also.

Decent enough job by the bench. Good jobs by McRoberts and Murphy (minus the missed FT's)

And with Fisher, he might be a captain and a veteran and all, but the dude is slow and needs to have more of a reserve role.
  • jamesmir11jamesmir11 December 2011
One thing that I will say though, even though the Lakers lost, and yes Kobe seems to be reverting back into his untrustworthy self, is that defensively the Lakers are looking a lot more alive than when Phil Jackson still was there. It is definitely going to be a difficult season but I think they're on the right track.

And yes, Fish needs to retire asap.
