As of this moment, this is the order for the 1st Round of the 2009 MLB Draft. Two important factors still remain as to the final make up of this list

    1. Free Agent Signings: Elias usually releases the new rankings right after the
World Series. At that time we will have a better idea
of what our own FA would bring back and the cost of any
    FA signing.

    2. Seattle: The have until a couple of days before the draft to sign former
college closer, RH J. Fields. He is/was a college senior, so the
August 15th deadline did not apply to him.

Mother F'er. we just missed having our top pick protected, now we have the best pick available for other teams to grab. another reason to say no to CC. spend the money on our own guys and keep the #16 Pick!

Of course if Lowe did sign with the Yanks and we signed CC we may only move back 7 spots and gain a sandwich round pick.

That's why I am waiting until the Elias rankings come out after the World Series to come up with my 2009 LAD game plan. There are a lot of guys on the bubble between Type A and Type B that are solid players. If they end up being Type A, I would plan another way. Type B though ... let the games begin.

For example, a couple of years ago we signed a Type A, top of the rotation starter (Schmidt) from our division rival, thus giving them (our #1 historical rival) our 1st round pick. With that pick, #22, the chose HS RH T. Alderson. Some top prospects still on the board at that time also included, MI Nick Noonan, RH Jordan Zimmerman, LH Brett Cecil, CF Ben Revere, LH Josh Smoker.

Another guy available (Meche), a Type B, signed with the Royals.

Now what have those two accomplished since their signings

    GM 68 68 23 24 3.82 426.1 422 196 181 41 135 339 (5yr/$55m)
    JS 06 06 01 04 6.31 025.2 032 020 018 04 014 022 (3yr/$48m)

That comes out to 64 total pix thru 1 & 1S. That number can't increase but it could go down if teams sign or don't offer arb to their own A & B FAs . The Dodgers have 5 potential 1S pix and could pick up other teams' 1st rd pix for signing Manny or Lowe.

There are several guys who don't figure to be offered arb, such as Penny & Rentaria, and a few figure to stay with their current team. So, I'd expect the 1S rd to shrink from 31 to under 25. If the Dodgers offered arb to all their A/B FAs other than Penny they'd figure to end up with 6 or so selections in the first 55 or so pix. They would end up with less if they retained Manny and say Beimel, or more if they lose all their FAs. However, Babu has proven somewhat stingy with arb offers and Penny may not be the only guy we don't offer arb to.

Every silver lining has a cloud.

ugh. this is why i HATE the current F/A structure, the ranking numbers determine which team gets priority on the first round pick of the signing team if a team signs two free agents, right? if that is true i see a scenario, that may very likely happen where we get ZERO[/u] First round picks...

(oh and whoever the Idian's fan at Elias who made Blake a type B FA by less than 1/2 of a perscent, EFF YOU!)

here are some(very possible) scenarios where we get ZERO[/u] first rounders:

1- The Muts Sign Derek Lowe and Brian Fuentes. We resign Manny and Sign Dumpster for the open Rotation Spot. We get the Messes second round pick (COl gets their first) and we send our 16th over all pick to the Cubs for Dumpster's carcass.

2 - The Spankees sign Lowe and Burnett (How the EFF did AJ burnett manage to get a rating above Lowe?!?!?!?!), We sign Manny and one of the worthless suposed type A free agents (Pettite, Perez, Sheets, Dumpster). Again, no first rounder for you.

3 - Frisco signs Manny, we "compinsate" by signing Burell's carcas, Lowe goes to one of the NY teams along with Burnette, Perez, Sheets or Dumpster to the yanks or Fuentes or K-Rod to the Mess. we get a second rounder for Lowe, a Second Rounder for Manny (the gaint's first rounder is protected) and we give up our first rounder for Burrell.

man, F Elias in the A.

i've got a bad feeling we're gonna get screwed out of draft picks hard core this year...

I had no idea Texas added a 3rd MLB team!

Seriously, people need to stop thinking "vet first" when it comes to the Giants. I know that it has been true for a very long time, and after awhile it becomes a knee-jerk reaction, but they really aren't in that mode anymore. At most, the Giants will move young pitching for a young corner infielder with power. Other than that? Not so much...

i dunno, i still see them as a dark horse, along with Philly...

and yeah, didn't you hear? THey're moving that AAA team from the south side of the bay to middle-of-nowhere Texas, because they feel they will be able to draw better crowds there!

    CarolinaBlues,

The two things that work against Lowe in his Elias ratings are ....

    - Wins
    - Strikeouts

Even though he has more IP, a better ERA, he doesn't have the "flashy" counting stats that Elias uses.

Sabean will sign his share of vets, but these will be the usual cheap scrap heap guys to fill holes, like Aurelia.

I liked the look of Sandoval as a hitter, so I figure he is the Gnats 1B next season. They figure to keep Molina behind the dish until Posey is ready, which may come mid year. Any one of a few in-house options should fit at 2B, while Rowand mans CF and Winn RF. That leaves gaping holes at 3B, SS and LF.

I figure Sabes goes for a cheap scrap heap vet for one of those 3 spots, trades a package including a young arm or two for a young good-hitting corner spot player and a stop-gap at the other position. Then he bides his time waiting on Baumgarner and Alderson to develop, along with a few good looking position prospects, and hopes to put a solid team on the field in 2010.

I think the Rox also look at 09 as another development year, and may takes a step or two back by trading Holliday and/or Atkins. The Putrids look to be going into full fire-sale/rebuild mode. The Dodgers and Snakes could be hard pressed to stay as strong as they ended this season with all the key players going FA. None of these clubs figures to go hog wild after expensive FAs, and the Dodgers may be the only NL West club that goes after even one stud FA.

Every silver lining has a cloud.

In separate ways, West Florida High's Brett Lee and Tate's Jayce Boyd created an impact Thursday by signing baseball scholarships at Florida State.

After several years of not having a player from the Pensacola area on their roster, the Seminoles landed a duo who could enhance their future.

Lee, a 6-foot-4 left-handed pitcher, was a big reason why the Jaguars advanced to the region championship game last season. He is the first baseball player in school history to sign an early letter-of-intent with an NCAA Division 1-A team. Plus, the Seminoles are annually among elite baseball teams. They made their 19th appearance in the College World Series last June.

But Lee might also have another option to ponder.

He is regarded among the best pitchers in Florida, which hasn't been lost on professional scouts. The Los Angeles Dodgers, among others, have made a home visit. Lee was 8-2 with a 1.64 earned run average last season for the Jaguars. But he also enhanced his status in the summer when he roomed with Boyd on a traveling all-star team.

"About every school wanted him," Conti said. "Alabama, LSU, Florida, you name it, he was offered. When you get a kid his size, and he's left-handed, and he throws in the 90s (miles per-hour) with his accuracy, everyone is drooling over him."

For now, Lee is focussed on helping West Florida High enjoy another stellar season. The Jaguars won their district title last year and reached the region championship game.

    0017 - 1st Round
    0036 - 1st Round Supplemental (Type A - Derek Lowe)
0051 - 2nd Round (From ATL for Derek Lowe)

    0212 - 7th Round
    0242 - 8th Round
    0272 - 9th Round
    0302 - 10th Round

Seattle could go a long way to rebuilding their farm system with five of the first forty-five picks. They hired the right guy in Jack Z. His rep is nearly as good as Logan White's.

The Angels are sitting pretty, too, with four of the top forty picks.

Add to that, Moreno's willingness to pay for talent, I can see them doing well also. That is our one major problem, the ownership of the Dodgers doesn't seem to want to spend on development like the old days

IMHO - they could end up really benefitting by exchanging K-Rod for Fuentes, as they gained 8 spots in the 1st round, while adding a supplemental pick, and I think Fuentes is the better pitcher. K-Rod got a lot of hype from compiling an impressive counting stat (# of Saves), but his key pitching quality stats weren't that great, while Fuentes' stats were VG top to bottom, and he accomplished that pitching half his games in Coors Canaveral.

The Halos figure to feel the loss of Teixeira.

The Fuentes for K-Rod swap could end up influencing changes to the compensation rules, as why should a team benfit in gaining a high draft pick by just exchanging similar players?

Every silver lining has a cloud.

Yes. The Brand is all about publicity, and putting top dollar into scouting and drafting both domestic and international talent is not going to catch the eye of or have an impact on the casual fan that they're targeting. Avid fans like us care, but the average fan is not going to care at all about their skimping on young talent. The casual fan is attracted by stars like Manny. It's all about the "now," and casual fans will be the ones to put the Brand at the four million mark--or not.

Actually, the Angels spent the least of all 30 MLB clubs last year on the draft.

Actually, I was thinking of the past when they overpaid big time for Mark Trumbo and Nick Adenhart. Since then, Snidely has been dropping the big coin on overrated free agents. The last time the Dodgers went over slot (Andy LaRoche) was when Dan Evans was running the show and Fox still signed the checks. That is also the last time we had a big international signing (can't remember if it was Guzman or Aybar we spent huge on).

I think Guzman was the last. Aybar being a year or two before him.

Angel Farm Director Eddie Bane has taken a lot of high risk/high reward type guys in the last few drafts, part of the risk being able to sign them and they didn't. I expect to see them make a concerted effort to judge signability this year.

Yeah, I think that Jordan Walden was the last big money, out of slot, signing I can think of by the Angels.

I will still bet on Houston. I gotta feeling the Yankees will overpay their first round pick and sign someone, for huge money, that they drafted in the middle rounds because he bonus demands himself out of the first five rounds.

I agree with Torgy ... NYY still have the comp pick in the 1st Round (Failure to sign 2008 pick Gerrit Cole) and we all know that even though they lost their #1 (Teixeira), #2 (Sabathia) and #3 (Burnett), they will have no qualms about going above slot in the 4th - End to grab the highest rated talent.

With the signing of Hudson, the Dodger picks in the top 5 rounds are ...

036 1st Round Supplemental (Derek Lowe)
053 2nd Round (From ATL for FA RH Derek Lowe)
    063 2nd Round
    094 3rd Round

    155 5th Round

BF - Seattle recently signed their no 1 pick from 08, so they no longer have pick #21 in the next draft and the next 1st rd will only be 32 picks long. The Mess re-signed Oliver P, so he no longer figures either.

So, right now the Dodgers first pick in the supplemental rd would come at #35, but that is likely to change. I am not sure where the supplemental pick for O-Dog will come - it could come before the Dodgers for losing Lowe.

Sheets and Byrd don't figure to sign before June, so they can be factored out, leaving only 5 A & B FAs left (Manny, O-Cab, Cruz, Grudz & Reyes)to affect the draft order. There figure to be more supplemental pix assigned for most or all of these guys, so the Dodgers 2nd rd and later pix figures to slide a few spots.

Every silver lining has a cloud.
