Simulation League needs GMs!!!
  • BluePastorKyleBluePastorKyle December 2008
    Hey all -

I'm in a SIM league with Beags, HunterAlan, theBuland, CarolinaBlues, and a couple others from this board. There are a total of 16 teams in this league - and it's very competitive. If you're the kind that really enjoys the off-season stuff, then a SIM league is for you. A SIM league uses the real-life stats from MLB players from the previous season, and a computer simulates 162 games (one game per team, per day) based on the rosters put together by us ameteur GMs. Each team has a 40-man roster (25 on the MLB squad at one time), and a minor league system.

We need 3 new owners to take over 3 existing teams. We're currently preparing to have our 2009 Free Agent signing fest (starts in January), and it's a lot of fun. Again, most of the work is done between now (mid-December) and late February. But you can still make trades, promote or demote players, change your lineup, and do all kinds of things - as needed - during the regular season.

We have our own message board, and there is a lot of interaction between the GMs.

Basically, if you think you can do a better job than Ned Colletti, this is the place to prove it. :)

Simply reply to this thread if you're remotely interested in learning more.

    Robb -
It's like fantasy, in that you have the control to set up your own team, set a lineup, and such, but it's a bit more invloved... For example, you don't just manage 6 or 7 pitchers and simply submit them in the slot on the day they pitch; you actually set the 5-man rotation. You actually set your hitting lineup, 1-9 (DH rule is in effect). For a fantasy team, you'd simply put these guys in a position over another guy on your bench. But in SIM, you not only put him in position, but you place him in a certain spot in the lineup.

You also have a bullpen, a bench (you can use them for platoons, pinch hitting, etc.), and that minor league system as mentioned before.

Best thing to do is have you go here: http://www.majorsimleague.com/index.html to check out a ton of information, including the rules. And I also recommend you go here: http://s15.invisionfree.com/SIM_Baseball_League/index.php to check out how we interact with one another, as well as look at threads where past free agent signings and minor league drafts have been done.

Once you've done that, come back here and give me a final thumbs-up. We'd love to have you join us, Robb. Just want you to be fully aware of what it all is...!

    all sounds mighty interesting
i'm a geek. would i inherit an already existing team with a roster?
and of course on the sly, is there dinero involved?
  • BrooksterBrookster December 2008
    Hey guys,

If you played a game like "Strat-o-Matic" as a kid, then this game is for you.

It's a great league and not an overly complicated game. Like you, Robb, I was into fantasy baseball and inherited a team last year mid-season. It didn't take too long to figure it out. I am looking forward to my first full season and hoping to turn the "organization" around. No real dinero is involved.

i would love to take the manbearpigs but i do have a couple of macs only
    problem??
  • SVbeagador December 2008
If you only have macs it means you cannot run the PC program which is used to submit lineups. It does not make it impossible, but I think would make it more difficult. The website will be up where you can keep up to date on your team, but you will not be able to just make changes and send a profile (just a zip file); instead you would have to tell the person running the program what changes to make and how to set your lineup. All of the reports can be downloaded to an excel file . . . but it seems much easier for you (and more fun) if you were able to use the program. I can check again and see if it can be used on Macs. But, I do not think so.

We use a program from diamond mind, this is what they state regarding Macs:

"Runs on the Mac with Windows emulation

Some of our customers looked at all of the baseball games that are available for the Mac and didn't find any that satisfied their desire for strategy, realism, and statistical accuracy. So they run DMB with the help of hardware and/or software products that allow Macintosh computers to run Windows programs. We readily admit that this isn't an ideal solution for Macintosh users, but it's an option that some of you might want to know about."

I also found this blog about Diamond mind and Mac:

if it's non mac compatible than i'm most likely out
  • BluePastorKyleBluePastorKyle December 2008
Robb, if you mean "geek" in the computer sense as well as the baseball sense, I'm guessing you'd have no problem figuring out the hoops to run things on the Mac.

We still need one more owner... we found one other today, so they're going fast.
  • the+ditchdiggerthe ditchdigger December 2008
definitely not a geek in that sense.
if i can't get the manbearpigs, the other team seems like alot more damage control

The manbearpigs are still open, but it seems like there is a MAC issue.
  • derrickm December 2008
If there is still a team available I would love to give it a shot. I used to play Diamond Mind all the time. Even back in the days when it was just a board game and was called "Pursue the Pennant'.

I have to see what team will be open. Right now open teams are the manbearpigs and the Rebs. Robb seemed interested and said he would like the manbearpigs, but he seems to have a Mac issue. If he does not want to join, then you could have the manbearpigs or Yazoo Wallbangers. They both need work, but the good Pastor took a horrible team the year before and turned them into Champions.

    Robb-

you really need to make sure that you can get the program running on your comp, i have been having problems getting it to work on Windows XP for several months and it is a major pain tring to get my roster updated, and that is with 3 years experiance with the program, i know exactly which controls to adjust and it is still a major pain in the rear for me (and i'm assuming him too) for me to relay my roster moves for Beags to imput. I cant immagine how difficult it would be if you've never actually used the program...

    Woot!!!
  • SVbeagador December 2008
The two open teams are the Manbearpigs and the Wallbangers. The manbearpigs clearly seems to have more talent. So, the first team that can commit (sign up to the message board and just tell us), you can have the manbearpigs or if you really want a rebuilding project you can take the Wallbangers

Note, if you have a Mac you will not be able to run the software (which is why I assume Robb might not be able to take a team)

Also our official league activities will not start until after the Holiday season (though people can trade, promote, waive players now).

Do I need to own a copy of the latest version of DMB to play? I currently only have version 8. I haven't upgraded to 9 yet.
  • derrickm December 2008
I just registered on the message board. Looking forward to getting started!

    Thanks a lot!

All - we have 1 more spot open . . . the Yazoo Wallbangers. If you are interested in this fun league, please let us know.

Sounds interesting. I do have some questions though

    1. Where do I find the information on the Ballparks selected/available.

    2. The Wallbangers have two players on the current roster (Mussian and Morris) who are retired. What are the rules regarding dropping them/adding players.

    3. Are there team colors :)

    4. Is there a "dictionary" so I can accurately understand all of the codes being used.

    5. Were is the salary info.

    That's enough to start with.
  • CarolinaBlues December 2008
1 - you need to open the database in DMB, the mst recent database can be found Here

2 - each year is played off of the previous years stats, so Mussina is still useable in the next year, after that you would simply waive and release him.

3 - about half of the teams have logos, you are free to pick any logo you want, so i guess team colors would be fine two... (mine would be blue and white)

4 - no specific dictionary, no, your best bet would be to simply ask when you have a question.

5 - Salary isnt carried over year to year, each team just gets 30 Million to spend every offseason, but your players signed in previous offseasons do not factor in, it's basicly just like a rotissire auction draft, split up into three parts that cycle every three years, every player is a three year keeper.
  • BluePastorKyleBluePastorKyle December 2008
BF, a SIM league was *created* for guys like you, by the way. You love to crunch numbers, assess teams, work through salary stuff, etc. If you've never done a SIM league, I'd bet the house you're gonna love it.

    Hi everyone,

I think we may have a need for 1 new owner that just came up. The SD Manbearpigs. This is a great simulation league. If you are interested please let me know. We are getting into our offseason signings so you will be jumping right into action.

That's correct. The team that needs a new owner is the SD Manbearpigs.

Trying to get rid of me already guys :)
  • SVbeagador January 2009
Reminder - we still need 1 more GM to replace an owner that left. We are in the process of free agent signings. You can jump in and check it out. After free agent signings, there is some down time so if you don't like it we can find another owner.

by some miraculous way is this mac compatible yet?

    the ditchdigger:

Nope. However, there is suppose to be a new version of DMB coming out in the next few months. If you have access to Excel then you can easily participate in free agent bidding. We have a silent bid for the players (if a player is not signed in Silent Bidding), then bidding continues to open bidding. The current manbearpigs team can be shown in an excel file also. So the best part of SIM is building a team (through free agency and the minor league draft). You don't need the program to do that. So maybe you could consider building the team and seeing if a MAC version comes in the next DMB program update.

Here is the excel file for free agent signings: http://www.majorsimleague.com/2009season/FreeAgentList.xls

The lists of players to submit bids is not too many. The main tab lists all of the main stats for the players. You can look at ESPN or Yahoo for more stats.

Think it over. I think you could really enjoy building the team. Then, hopefully, there will be a DMB for the MAC version. Yet, all of the reports get put in the Web. And, the manager profile can also be run as an excel file. It's better to have the program, but building the team does not require the program especially the way we have free agent bidding set.

I also did find this on the Diamond mind website:

"Will I still be able to run my emulator to play on the Macintosh?
Yes. Version 9 is a standard Windows application. If you have a Macintosh with hardware or software that enables you to run Windows applications, Version 9 should run on your computer. "

I have no idea what this means. I never owned a MAC. I don't know if it means anything to you or if any other MAC people can explain.

    the ditchdigger:

Here is actually the MBPs team (in an excel file). Towards the lower portion of the page is the manager profile which is basically all you really set with DMB (meaning it can be set just by stating your options). http://www.majorsimleague.com/2009season/Team_Roster.xls As you can see (if you use Excel) you really have all the information.

In fact, I don't even use the DMB program for my free agency. I download an excel file for the free agency and my team and then I sort and make notes throughout the signing period (basically just update excel). Many people do similar functions. Since we don't play head-to-head games, the only real thing that the program needs is to send in manager profile updates, but that can easily be done via e-mail (there is one person who runs the "main" program and you just tell them what changes to make, which people actually also do all the time). If you are good with excel, I think it can work out very good and in the future hopefully MAC should work (or there has also been talk of moving the computer game to an on-line game).
