Former Dodgers coach Danny Ozark passed away today in Vero Beach at the age of 85. One of my former neighbors in Vero used to play golf with him.
Ozark was a coach under Walter Alston in the 60's and 70's, before taking over as manager of the Phillies. Ironically, he is best remembered for a move he did NOT make in the 1977 LCS versus the Dodgers. He elected to leave Greg Luzinski in left field and Manny Mota hit a decisive double off Luzinski's glove, a key hit in a two out come from behind rally by the Blue. That was one of the greatest games in Dodgers history...too bad Danny was on the other side.
I certainly remember Danny. Butchered the English language. Great guy.
The Easternmost in Quality...the Westernmost in Flavor!!He also came back after his stint as Phillies manager to coach third for Lasorda. On Monday's homer against the Expos, he gave the first High Five to him and spun around.
RIP
